    Well done Andy on 3rd in Qualy, on a few tenths from pole. You will be 1st after 100m with the usual great start.

        fuel pump wiring issue I believe.
        fixed now .
        little bit of panel damage Friday.

            Was an interesting weekend, every little thing that could go wrong did, but when the car was working properly it was as good as it's ever been.

            Practice
            Went out on old tyres to work out where the track went again and started building up to having a crack at a decent lap when the brake pedal went to the floor coming into turn 11. Drove it back to the pit lane expecting to have burst a brake line but all the fluid was still in the system so it appeared to be boiling brake fluid. Weird, because I ran the same brakes last year and they were fine. Put it down to the pads not being bedded in properly and went back out once it cooled off a little.

            Qualifying
            Bled the brakes up, put the old pads from last year back because we figured these worked fine so they must be ok again, and put some new rubber. Went out scrubbed the tyres and had a crack. Ended up .1 off Browny in second spot for most of the session until Hislop banked a good time right at the end and put me back to 3rd, .05 quicker than my time. Was hoping to be on the front row for the start, as I'd need all the help I could get to keep away from those two for the duration of a race.



            Race 1
            Plan was to get the best start I've ever done and go for it to see what sort of a gap I could pull.
            On the warm up lap I started getting fuel pressure warnings off the dash and the car would momentarily cut out coming out of right hand corners. Not ideal but not much I can do about it at that point.
            Got a wicked start and the other two held each other up on turn 1, even better. Managed to pull a decent gap until I got to turn 8 where the car shut off until halfway to 9. Still in front but no more lead. Hung on with it cutting in and out until the next lap where it shut off all together and I parked it.
            Haven't had a chance to find the actual wiring fault because we just bypassed it, but there was something that's come loose inside the factory fuse board which was switching the relay off when you rattled the fuse box. I'm guessing it didn't like kerbs very much.

            Race 2
            Started from the back row and got to 8th, then the brake fluid boiled again and I dropped back to 10th driving around pumping up the brake pedal.
            Got a post race drive through penalty for contact passing someone on the first lap. I braked, thought he'd seen me but he hadn't and shut the door.
            I hit his back wheel spinning him round. Penalty put me back to 17th for race 3... time to fit brake ducts, move the intercooler sprayers to the rotors and try again.

            Race 3
            Got held up a fair bit for the first 3 laps with a few guys having a massive battle.
            Joined in for a while and managed to pick them off one by one, finishing 8th.

            Race 4
            Needed another good start and to get to Browny and Hislop at the front if I was going to have any shot at staying with them. Had a rough plan of where to go at the start and guessed correctly with a nice big spot opening up for me to fit into, got to turn 4 and was battling for 2nd. Avoided a couple of divebombs on the first lap and started to chase down Peter Ingram's RX7.
            Unfortunately there was a big shunt in turn 8 and the race finished under safety car. Disappointing finish but still happy with 3rd spot after a fairly trying weekend.
            Time to get some decent brakes for it and prepare for the IP nationals later in the year.

              Cracking job Andy. Your start in race 1 had me cheering at the screen. Fark it got off the line well.

                Watched all 4 races last night.

                Spewing you couldn't string a decent weekend together. I don't think many did anyway. The thing was a jet.

                  Bloody hell some of your opposition were being a tad 'brave' under brakes not that it was paying off. Some unexpected power out there too?

                      Need to look at options for front brake replacements as well.
                      Problem I have is that the pads in the alcon/AP offerings which will fit under my 17" wheels are only 18mm thick.
                      I'm not convinced that they will really be up to the task as the car gets quicker, obviously the slightly bigger disc and better calipers would help as well but am I wasting my time and should I be saving my pennies to go to 18's to fit something I'll never have to worry about?

                        Do you know what peak temperature the existing setup is getting to? IE are they getting over the maximum for the range of the pads, and staying over for an extended period? If the heat is not dissipating, thicker pads and bigger rotors will just delay the inevitable. Are you getting enough airflow through the existing setup?

                        Answers to these questions will help answer your question.

                          The issue isn't so much that the pads are getting over temperature, they actually work really well. The brake fluid was boiling after about 6 laps at clipsal due to it not being able to disperse the heat well enough.
                          I'm using SRF which is about the highest temp fluid available, but the standard calipers and rotors seem to retain a lot of residual heat which is just cooking everything after an extended period of time.
                          We put brake ducting on, but there isn't a lot of room with the factory caliper size to fit a decent diameter tube into the rotor, so it basically did nothing. Moving the intercooler sprayers onto the rotors helped, until it ran out of water and cooked everything anyway.

                          My thoughts were that the only reason you run the larger pads and rotors is to give you more time before it cooks everything, and with the better quality rotor construction and less material in the AP calipers the heat buildup will be reduced a lot. Question is, how large do I need to go if I'm only just having issues now on what's probably the worst circuit in the country for brake temps?

                            Assuming your brake fluid was new prior to the weekend, do you have your brake ducting set up as in the above drawing, in particular with the ducting sealed to the inside of the rotor? I've drawn it with two small ducts, acknowledging your packaging issue with the calipers. This setup makes a difference to how well the rotors cool and therefore the heat transmitted in to the fluid. Just pointing the ducting at the rotor does not get the same airflow through the rotor vanes.

                            If you have this setup already, the only other thing I can think of is a bigger reservoir for the redirected intercooler sprayers. How are you travelling relative to minimum weight?

                            Trying to rule out all the cheap options before you go to the expense of new tyres, wheels and brakes.....

                              I've recently come to the same conclusion with regards to brakes and cooling, the mass of the components can only do so much, after that it is all about cooling them effectively. Managing the airflow to maximise the flow where required. I do love some of the skeletal titanium brake calipers available these days....
