Is that a single axle Tilta you are towing the Commodore with? How does it go travelling long distances?

    Comment

It is a single axle trailer, but Loadsafe. Not a Tilta trailer, although it does tilt.. It works fine with a Commodore on it, you just need to make sure you load the car correctly or you get speed wobbles at 100km/h. If I park the car with the right weight on the towball, and not put heavy shit in the boot like full jerry cans, it's fine.

I was supposed to be racing at Winton on the weekend, but since my license expired, I need to do a medical, and it was going to cost a lot for 3 races, I opted to take the car to Phillip a Island for a run at a sprint day instead. The first session was going to be the quick one as the day was warm and very sunny, but unfortunately I got shown a meatball flag on my 3rd flying lap, came in, and it wasn't for me. :/
I did a 1:47, then a 46 on the second lap. Next session I could only get a 1:45.04. The car was brilliant, everything is finally working together and the car feels really good. I just couldn't drive it any faster. I am not sure if it's because the day was so slow with the gokarts taking up so much time. I just didn't have the passion/desire to give it a bit more. Any other day I would have tried to drive it a bit harder, but for some reason I was lifting at hay shed, tapping the brake at T12, going a little slower at T1. It just felt so fast after being in the MX5, that the speeds I was doing was more than enough. Maybe I am getting old..
I was leaving turn 12 really well, so my top speed was up- 250km/h.

This is the only pic I took on the day.

I spent a few hours detailing the car and converting it back to VN Group A spec. It looks too nice to race now. I am putting it on My105 tonight. It will be sad to see it go.

The price is negotiable, but no lizard tanks. I don't think I would ever build a commodore race car again. What it costs to build, and what you can sell it for makes you cry. I drove a friends VN Racecar that has had a 6.0l built engine in it and a 4 speed box last weekend. It's amazing how different it feels compared to this car. His has a huge cam, and just doesn't feel like it pulls anywhere near as hard as my car. His car understeers a lot, you can feel the front tyres giving way, so you have to hold the pedal to make it around the corner. Mine is not like that at all. But his rear grip is better than mine, I found it almost impossible to get his to break traction at the rear, mine is always a but loose in the rear. I only did a 1:51 at Phillip island in his, he had the wrong gearing, so just cruised to T1 after the bridge at 6000rpm... I thought he said to shift a 6000, (supposed to shift at 6500) but because of the big cam and wide ratios in the 4 speed, I lost a lot of time. He did a 1:48. And he did feel good beating the Lightyear. I think that made his day. :)

Coincidently, I did the same lap time in his car cruising around as I did in my MX5 driving it flat out. I was driving his car quick, just not on the straight.

I find it incredible just how much chassis variation there is in the old (at least VN from personal experience) Commodores. I've had 3, and even with the same setup across all of them, two went straight as an arrow, with one being mm's out from the factory specs initially, and the other wanted the kill me at every chance it got.

Sad sale btw, I'd hang on as long as I could.

Fuck that's a good looking car.

It doesn't look like the typical car that I would race. I always have untidy shitboxes that somehow do good lap times. This car looks so tidy. But I did spend a lot longer than I should have getting it to look noice. I will post some more pics.

It's not limited to Commodores mate, but yeah - they seem to eat cash quick.

To give you some perspective Steve Devjak won the NSW IPRA State Championship in his VX SS, that thing had some quality gear in it and was stupidly fast. He could steer a bit too which obviously helps ! I'd hate to think what it owed him. After winning the title he advertised it for 42k and no-one would go near it. Dropped it to 32k and it still sat around. Eventually sold, but i'm guessing mid to high 20's...

In hindsight i should have bought it myself, but i'm a tightarse... :)
