Iím putting my 393 back together today and thinking about this killer engine whilst doing so. Not sure if it scares me or comforts me.

What sort of run time are you expecting out of it? Valvetrain stuff consumable or not too bad?

the rods now have 12 hits on them, will change them at 40, it goes through rockers, but always have spares, had to change one on sunday morning, now im using manton pushrods all issues up there are pretty much gone, will do springs and valves after gups lights out on the 22nd feb,

Dale, this is a bit of a weird question but, what surprising stuff have you learned since you first built the first version of the car? Stuff like "pushrods warp at 2000hp" or "plastigage is made out of recycled duck turds" or whatever

lots... the more you spend on engine parts the better the quality... the biggest thing is the electronics.. we went from 150ft altitude with a normal DA of 600-1000ft to 2200ft with a DA of 5900ft and I didn't have to touch the fuel map in the ecu on 39 or 47psi... as we run boost control off wastegate dome pressure I did have to adjust that, but I could have told the ecu I wanted 40psi in the manifold and it would adjust the dome pressure to suit but I have not ever used that so I didn't want to set it up and try it with 10000 people watching

It doesn't start very well, i'd probably spend some time on that next

Is there any warming of the engine before the runs?

hahah fucking thing started straight up this morning and idled perfectly... it really didn't like the altitude.. it also has no electronic pump on it so only gets 3psi of fuel pressure on cranking.

yes we warmed them up about a hour before running them, I usually aim to be on the start line with the cylinder head temp between 40 and 45deg

Do the rod manufacturers give any lifespan guidelines or is it all based on other people's misfortune to keep them held together?

Funnily enough I was wondering the same thing after seeing vision from the weekend. Cheers Dale for answering that.

honestly since dominator sent me some manton pushrods we have had almost zero issues, having to change a rocker on sunday morning was a little bit of a shock,
