Well.........
A couple of months back, I second guessed myself and really thought I wanted to sell the Merc engine and box and go a 1JZ instead.
But, I haven't sold my Merc engine and gearbox (and I probably didn't really try that hard either). So I think I'm going to use them still.
I need a way to make this engine transmit it's power to the gearbox. They bolt together bellhousing wise, but they were never made to come together as a unit. So I'm not really aware of any off the shelf flywheel and clutch assembly combos that work properly. Plus I'd like a lightweight flywheel and clutch assembly as well.
First off, clutches. Both of the following clutches would be overkill for my intended naturally aspirated engine and probably won't be so flash for driving on the street (which would be limited anyway), especially with a light flywheel . However, they are very cheap even though they might need relining of the clutch discs and the plates and pressure plate might need work. They both have 26 splines, but might not be the right diameter for the input shaft as well.
But, they're light and they're smaller diameter which is a consideration for the flywheel (below)
Twin Plate

Triple Plate

Secondly, flywheel. I'm thinking of keeping the existing automatic flex plate with ring gear (It's steel/iron, but is full of holes and probably not too heavy) and making an aluminium flywheel.
The bonus of using one of the above clutches, is I could make a flywheel small enough that it would actually fit on my lathe at home.
I also need to make allowance for a support bearing for the gearbox input shaft in the flywheel itself as the gearbox is short nose. Like below.

So after thinking on it over the weekend, I dropped USD$200 on one of these triple plate badboys yesterday including shipping to Oz.
I might end up making some changes, like converting to twin "rally" plates instead of the triple sintered metal plates for slightly improved user friendliness.

This could be interesting...........

Will do. When I spoke to him initially, he offered me a second hand 7.25 Tilton clutch, so getting this thing going shouldn't be a big dramaOriginally posted by Guido View PostGreat stuff. Let me know what Jim thinks of getting the Tilton to work.

I'm probably reviving something that has already been decided on, but if you needed more convincing:

Music is Verdamp Lang Her... great song.
190's
the DTM golden years with the E30 M3's..
Couple usefull sites to get the best out of your motor and suspension etc etc..
Dbilas are the bomb, and if they don't have a part or section you're looking for, e-mail them and they'll reply in quite good english with advice. There's heaps they have that isn't listed on the website (mainly for other models but probably for 190's too).

If you get this car setup right, as a NA car you should be able to quite easily compete with some very fast machines and with the right steering beat them. They're very nimble cars setup correctly.

Actual progress! I know it's not overly significant in the grand scheme of car projects, but this hasn't seen a spanner turned for a few months now. Some of you older Brisbane members might even recognise one of my helpers.......

I even took the time to finish setting up the little lathe I got and give it a quick test run...
