    Gaz's Pork 914

My long-term project of choice is a Porsche 914.

Why? I was thinking about what I wanted as a car and the list was:

    About 1000 kg
    About 200 hp
    Independent suspension at both ends
    4 wheels disc brakes
    A bit different

I have always been a Porsche nut and so when I ended up working on a 914 for work, I thought - "this isn't too bad"

I did some research and found that a 911 six would go in without toooo much trouble and the decision was made

As they were never sold in Aus, I considered importing one but while I was looking around, this one turned up.

I knew 914s were rust prone, so checked all the "normal" places and it was clean as a whistle.
There was a couple of rust bubbles around the "bonnet" opening but it didn't look too bad :knock:

I bought it as a rolling shell, which suited me as I wanted a 6 cylinder one anyway!
The front suspension is from a later 911 and the hubs are 5-stud Porsche

Here is how it looked when I got it home

Fantastic start for a project I reckon. If GT Legends is anything to go by, this will handle really well. How expensive are Porsche 6 motors? PErhaps a bored out Volky 4 might be better in terms of cost (perhaps one with even a toyota supercharger on it)?

nothing wrong with aluminium cased type 4's these days..

does the funny shaped rubber between the bonnet and front bumper mean theres rust under it? or is it just deformed?

i know of a 2.4E motor in sydney if you're keen.. i dunno how much he wants for it though.

It's a shame it needs to be air cooled and no doubt has massive space constraints. I'm trying to imagine what that thing would be like to drive with a current generation Subaru 3.0 H6 slotted in there :D

          Yeah I'm dreamin.

This is a project build I will be watching. That's one cool car Gary.

            Already have an engine :D

            2.2 Litre from a 1972 911T.
Apparently it has "S" cams and was replaced to put a larger engine in.
Probably only about 140 hp, but a good start to get the thing going.

are you going to put oil fed chain tensioners on? and are you going to stick with the carbies?

and god damn those gearboxes are weird! hah, takes ages to get used to first.

The tensioners are now mechanical and I am still in 2 minds about carbies.
They are going to sound fantastic but I love the driveability of an EFI setup.

EFI Throttle bodies are about $3K, which isn't in the budget!!

I may do the carbies for the short term and a megasquirt for the ignition only with the full efi later

I already have a falcon crank angle sensor and coil pack, just need the 36-1 wheel.

                Lots more progress to come!

                cheers

from reading about 911T engines they always seem to be running rich

although i have seen some awesome webber setups, but i can imagine they're a nightmare to tune.

There was about 5 coats of paint once I started looking.
I stripped off most of the paint down to bare metal and gave it a coat of primer.

I started to investigate the rust and ended up finding that there was A LOT rust holes filled with bog in the front of the tub

That scared me off for quite a while.

Well after looking at a heap of other great pics of everyone else's restoration project at www.914club.com (now split into www.914club.com and www.914world.com), I finally got myself a MIG welder and a cool auto-darkening welding helmet.

Practised on some scrap first then bit the bullet and moved to the real thing.

                      Only minor stuff first.

Weld up holes in sail panel.

Welded up the hole for the lamp on the RHF fender.
                      Still needs some more smoothing.

removing the rust (and half the car!!)

Now the channel on the left of the part I cut out looked OK and you can see where I POR15'd some of it when I did the front guard.

But then I noticed there seemed to be some rust forming between the metal parts and decided to investigate.

You can see that the POR15 hasn't penetrated, although it adhered really well to the exposed metal.

                        Almost done

This is what it looks like now.

                          Tackled the RH cowl area

POR 15'd the cowl after cleaning up the rust and welding up some holes.

Made up some pieces to repair the inner guard and welded them in.

The only way I could think to do it was to use two pieces.
The first vertical piece (green highlight) was welded to the remains of the inner guard.
Then a patch was welded to fill up the hole (orange highlight).
Not the best job in the world but it won't be seen when the outer skin is repaired.

                          POR 15'd that as well

I made a new piece for the cowl area. I am sure it isn't EXACTLY the shape that came from the factory but I am reasonably pleased with the result. And it took me most of a day to do

This thread has been invaluable in getting the cowl back into shape.

RH guard repaired, not concourse yet but it's done

Time to start on the LH guard. Cut a bit more out to get a better look.

Unfortunately, there was some rusting at the top of the door post

Bought myself a Dremel kit and used the small cut-off wheels to cut out some of the guard.

Here is a better pic of the rust on the door post

After some welding it ended up like this

Painted it with POR 15 before starting on the next bit of reconstruction.

I think I am starting to get the hang of the welding

More fabricating little filler pieces (cut out of an old filing cabinet actually!)

Then reweld the outer guard back on

                            Grinder gets a workout...

Then weld yet another filler piece to close up the guard.
