Are these the things toyota got in the poo for copying bits on Merc's?? The think I'm thinking of had an almost identical engine to a Merc with a single threaded hole added to make it different.

Either way this thing looks good!

Something about having the word 'Scania" on your turbo gives it cred :D

Awesome project. Thanks for the updates bud.

The scania suggests that I like large turbos but am too tight to pay for a proper one. It's accurate.

        Daily update.
Still haven't got the engine mounted. Damn mates seem to have better things to do on Xmas eve than help me fit 2JZ's to old crowns.

Did some more brake work instead. Mounted the hubs and front brakes, made a few new pipes to accomodate the now dual circuit setup, scraped off large amounts of grime to access bolts etc. Did a quick ghetto bleed and got a good pedal.

        Brake pipes.

Front brakes and hubs from MS112. The ball joints bolted up to the arms(they are larger than the MS55's) and it all bolted on nicely(except for the inch thick grime scraping).

Still have to fit the disc brake rear.

Re the Mercedes Copy: Can't remember exactly, but do seem to recall some connection there. It would make sense as the engine designation was M after all.

Al: Sorry, was too busy shovelling dirt onto the geotextile that covers my septic trench. Now I can get the blade on the tractor and push the rest of the dirt pile up and over.

Hopefully, I can get down there next week and give you a hand.

Got a bit done today. Been waiting (im)patiently for a hand from mates to make mounting the engine easier. Got jack of waiting so I did it by myself.

Threw the engine and box in and supported the box on the original gearbox X member and the front of the engine on some pieces of wood. A bit of adjustment, measurement, adjustment, repeat and it was ready to make mounts. There's two spirit levels in use because the hoist isn't very straight and the car doesn't have many common points of reference to measure from.

Made a cardboard template to go between the block plate and engine mount plate. Turned out that the same plate was usable for both sides. Tacked up one side, checked and adjusted level one last time and then tacked the other. Sat the engines weight on the mounts and checked everything again. All happy.

                Welded up and painted.

Even got room for the dipstick on the passenger side. :D

Onto the gearbox mount now. I actually had to remove the engine and box from the car again just to get the gearbox x member out of the car. It sits in the channel of the chassis so you have to slide it along the chassis channel a fair way to get it out. The new box being in there prevented this. Anyone who has fiddled with holden tonners will know how annoying this can be. I made a few mods to make it easier to get in and out whole I was cutting it up. I then had to refit the engine and box to make the gearbox mount.

So it's all sitting in there nicely now. Now I can check how much space I don't have to mount big things like turbos.

The exhaust housing flares up to 3.5" but I will only have room for 3" so will have to make a funky V band ring with a 4" outer and 3" inner(the inner part of the turbine exit is 3", it steps out to 3.5" at the end. It most likely has an exhaust brake mounted on the end of it in it's natural home).

It's good to get this part out of the way. :D

Looking really good, your fab work is unreal, very neat too.

I hope your going to paint that bay in the original colour for added hotness

is the gearbox xmember finished? while it looks thick enough, will it fail at the bend or am I over engineering for the stress on it?

Yeah not too sure about the gearbox X member yet. It's probably fine(6x100mm plate) but I am a bit into overengineering shit myself. That's why it isn't black yet. I had to be a bit conservative with the bracing because the X member is VERY difficult to get out of the chassis and any extra bracing will make it more difficult.

Then I think of how holden does gearbox mounts and think it is overdone already. 3mm plate, one bolt hole used when there is 2 there and just let it all sag into position. I am thinking VR/S V8.

I thing the crossmember looks fine bud. I, too, have nightmares about holden crossmembers :D

It would a appear that your idea of a family cruiser is a tad different to mine, I would have settled on a N/A 2J or 1UZ!
                            Love the work though.

It will be N/A for half of the rev range, that's the family half. The other half is the powercruise/skids half.

Got on to making the exhaust manifold yesterday after fitting the diff.

The size and position of the turbo was not ideal for ease of manifold manufacture. I also have never made a manifold this complex before so had to do a bit of research, thinking and cursing.

Here's the flange supported in place.

I decided to make a pair of pipes to each collector and then cut a third in to the side of each. This was to make the collector less bulky as it is already very close to...lots of things because it is freaking huge.
This is the collector before the 3rd pipes were added.

Added the two extra pipes with the help of a 32mm holes saw and a couple of hours work.

Starting expanding on the collector whilst working out where the runners could travel.

Then I ran out of usable amounts of elbows and pipe. On the 30th of December, when everyone who works at a steel supplier is camping at the beach and getting pissed. Rang everyone I know and got them to ring everyone they know to try and get a few elbows and some pipe. Finally got onto my mate who works at an engineering shop and he tells me that the "Pump House" has them. Who am I to question why a pump shop has large stocks of buttweld elbows and is open on the 30th of Dec.
25min drive later and I have a bagful of 32mm elbows and some pipe. Cools.

Started making the runners with my new stocks. Had to think about which order to weld them to the collector so welding one on won't make access to the next impossible. Got cylinders 3 and 4 done before children washing duties took over.

Back into it tomorrow, hopefully will get it all done(minus wastegate, that's another quandry) before some half arsed attempt at a New Years celebration is attempted(doomed to failure when I get woken at 5am by a crazy 3 yo every morning).
