Will need an "X" and can't point down at the track (according to the rule book but that doesn't appear to stop a lot of people) I assume you will be bring it out past the sill a bit to avoid heat/flame on the panel?

Yeah - you'll need the X in it, but direction will be fine. As Hoonboy said, it can't point at the track, but I've lost count of the number of start line pics with a huge flame pointed directly at the track surface.
