    E30 BMW -M52 2.8 conv 5 stud

Before i started doing my E36-LS1 conversion i had started working on my old E30. The plan was to drop a 1998 E39 5 series motor into it (2.8ltr, alloy block, 24V DOHC Vanos) which has plenty more go than the std SOHC iron 6 that came out in the E30's, plus the benefit of being lighter with an alloy block. I also put a lightened flywheel in and a M3 clutch.

I started on the suspension, wanting more adjustability and also a better stud pattern/offset to allow a better choice of wheels, also i wanted bigger brakes. I also wanted a faster ratio in the steering so a E36 rack was put in at the same time.

I purchased an old shell from the wreckers, so i could start to 'dummy' everything up. I got as far as engine and gearbox in and half the wiring sorted, and 90% of the suspension done (before the E36 came along).

This week i finally found a suitable body to transfer all my 'good' stuff over to, i spefically wanted a late model S2 E30, 2dr in White. I found a 318 cheap, which suits me fine as all the 4cyl stuff (motor/diff and susp) will be replaced with my other gear.

It will go down to my mates place in a few weeks to get a custom set of extractors made like these

Suspension wise i have had some camber/toe plates milled out (copy of a kit they sell oversea's) to correct the alignment when you drop E30 in the rear. Once done the subframe was powder coated and E36 compact traling arms were put in for their 5 stud pattern, better offset and also bigger brakes. New wheel bearings/bushes and brake lines/rotors were done at the same time.

Up front it copped some E30 M3 offset caster bushes, and also some 98+ M3 lower control arms ($$$), E36 325 hubs.brakes and some E36 M3 koni coil overs and E36 M3 sway bar links (go from strut to sway bar direct rather than lower control arm). Also a E36 steering rack with some custom PS lines.

Wheels i purchased a set of BBS RC 17x8 ball polished.

I have decided that i will throw all the suspension into the new shell next week, but i won't tackle moving the motor across until the E36 is driving.

    Anyway pics (grey body=old, white=new)

    Mess

New body (Seat cover is to cover the fucked front seat, recaro's will go in shortly.

Not much more will happen now until the E36 is driving. The end plan it to have both the white E30/2.8 and the E36/LS1 sorted before the end of the year.

Btw, the grey shell will be for sale if anyone wants a track hack or project.

I just sold my Daily driver, so both the E30 and E36 will be used on a daily basis.

Approx $3k for the std motor with low km's out of a late E39. Then i had to get a E34 sump and pick up, E36 M52 ECU/Loom/EWS, as the EWS III on the E39 is very hard to get working. Then the clutch, and M50 inlet, not to mention the extractors etc, It all adds up pretty quick.

Update, E36 front end is on, 5 stud rear is out of the old E30 and will get put under this later this week. The coil over are Konis off a E36 M3, they were quite firm in my E36, they are rock solid in a 4cyl E30 :w:

This is going to be very sweet, love it.

All up dollar figure on this sort of conversion? Are there cheaper options?

E36 steering rack conversion is approx $500 done right if you do it yourself.

E36 5 stud conversion is approx $2.5-3k depending on if you want to put a camber/toe kit in at the same time, and also if you are going to replace bushes as you go.

                E39 M52 conversion will give $6k a good run.

I've spent a bit more, but i went overboard on service items (new water pump, thermostat and housing, new disks, new bearings etc etc) and clutch/exhaust/powdercoating etc.

Then you have wheels/tyres/coilovers etc ontop of that.

Btw- a few people are not fans of the E36 5 stud conversion, saying it gives weird goeometry etc. I have just driven mine now and it drive perfect, much much nicer than previously. Will get an alingment later this week, so will know for sure then.

do you have to do the 5 stud conversion? is the z3 steering rack a cheaper option for the rack conversion (I've heard this is a must)

No you don't have to do 5 stud, infact 95% of people won't. I like it as you get bigger brakes, and also a better choice of wheels, Vs the 4 stud RWD offset fitment. You can just get bigger brakes for your 4 stud set up.

I have a pair of 6cyl E30 struts here if you need some (bigger shocks and brakes than a 4cyl).

Z3 rack is rare to find, so normally pricey. They are only 2.7 turns L to L, E30 is 4 turns, and E36 is 3.2.

Some say that the Z3 rack is exactly the same ratio as a E36 rack, but with travel limters in it, which is why it stops at 2.7 turns, so it is not effectively a faster ratio.

Some of the M3's had 3.0 L-L (not sure of total travel) and E46 330's are supposed to have faster racks.

so theres 2K I could save right there not doing the 5 stud conversion.

This is the one I'm looking at,

Looks good. If you do buy it and don;t want the tow bar, i'll buy it off you.

                        Cheers Glen

Fark, white S2 E30 coupe with twin-cam 2.8... just add fat cams and ITBs and it'd be something out of a wet dream of mine. I've actually been thinking about doing something along these very lines of late (though taking a few years to piece it all together)

How much wiring work does the M52 take over the M50? Stock ECU? Would it be easier/cheaper to run an aftermarket ECU (say if someone had something like an E11 Haltech kicking about with no place to call home *cough*? :D )

Where did you source the engine/5lug/suspension shiz from? Local mob (wrecker/importer/etc?)?

I just noticed in that last pic that it appears that your brake line is on the wrong side of the strut or has the grommet just popped out of the holder?

If you want to get rid of the 1.8 donk out of the new shell let me know. My sister has exactly the same thing and the motor is getting a little weary. Its being given to me in a year or so and will cop either an m52 or possibly something jap so as long as it lasts that long i'm happy
