    Dads 60th Birthday Gift

So next year is Dad's 60th birthday. He always was a huge fan of Brocky and the V8's, mostly the commodore's. He never owned a v8 commodore, just a vn v6 wagon once upon a time, he has never owned a toy car either, and has put up with my brother and I having too many toys over the years. He is the reason for our love of cars and why we have parking for 9 cars at our place.

The main prerequisites for the car to be a suitable gift for dad were:
    - V8
    - Commodore
    - Lumpy Cam and a little bit noisy
    - looks neat
    - interior was comfortable and nice (As mum will have to get in it too, if mum doesn't like it, the car will never get driven!)
    - Has to be easy to drive, dad has arthritis and it would be much easier on him with power steering
    - The car will be a secret hopefully until we give it to him. (We are pretty sure he doesn't read PF)
    - The cat must approve of course....

So in June, my brother (2LVLT is his nickname here on PF) Ben shot me a email with a link to an early model commodore on Ebay, two hours later we won the auction for a non running VC SLE commodore (just under $1300). It is a 1981 model, originally it would have been an irridescent blue colour, the previous owner that owned it for 17 yrs (7 years in a shed) had repainted it a VT commodore blue colour as can be seen in the picture.

The car wasn't running when we bought it. The only thing we could see that wasn't right was the ignition lead going from the electronic distributor to the coil wasn't connected. A bit of time was spent turning the engine over to get fuel up to the filter and into the carby (600cfm holley) and it started without too many problems. Other things know about the car:
    - lowered 2 inches all round
    - extractors and 2.5 inch single exhaust
    - supposedly a rebuilt engine with 10 thou oversize pistons
    - lumpy cam

At idle, the car sounds fantastic (Video will come sometime soon), the cam is a 40/80, which may mean more to some people than others. The next day, Ben spent a fair bit of time, plugging holes on the intake manifold and cleaning up the engine bay. A month or so later he found some pressure pack paint that was a similar colour to the car which helped tidy up the engine bay a little more. He also flushed the radiator, plugged up the breathers on the cam covers (they were just flowing straight out and had spewed oil into the bay) installed new leads and plugs and a shiny thermostat cover. Also flushed the heater system in the car, its now unblocked, but still doesn't work (Maybe electrical???).

    TBC....
Upcoming - Wheels, tyres, suspension, brakes, interior, electrical, bodywork.

              Nice job!

It's a pre fuel injected car so you should look at getting rid of the cat, maybe a decat-pipe?

              Who's your daddy?

Would look great with a nice HDT kit. You can get originals or aftermarket ones for a reasonable price.

Thankyou! I wish I had known that before I stood in front of the colour selection chart at supercheap for about an hour trying to figure out what colour it is.:knock:

But yes it does seem to be Bermuda blue :O
