I'm keen to see how this turns out. I've never seen that turbo set up in the pics above. Looks very tidy. I can imagine something like that in the engine bay of my EH. Interesting to see the oil drain from the turbo going back into the sump. I though I read somewhere that normally this was a no no i.e. needed to be plumbed into the block, or is it just dependent on where the oil level sits when the engines running to allow the oil to drain? I wouldn't have thought it mattered personally.

Early evos and nissan SR20 have the turbo oil drain into the side of the sump. As long as it's above the normal level, should be fine.

The oil return point doesn't essentially need to be above the oil level. As long as the turbo above it. Higher the better.

Well I dropped the front end out yesterday

Check out the quality welding I discovered!! I think a drunk seagull did it.

          The front outrigger...

              You think!

I'll get it all replaced when the cross member is modified for the rack.

                Eeesh...

Better to pick it up now though. And the turbo setup looks very tidy.

Going over the rest of the car now in case there are other "surprises"?

I think that's the last of the surprises. It's getting a fresh engine and gearbox, and a Volvo diff. I've already sorted the brakes and it hais new shocks all round and new front springs.

I know Holden has always been sloppy but that can't be factory? Must be from a front repair shirly. Cool car tho man, love the wagons.

Its a HR crossmember, the engine mounts and outrigger are tweaked to make fit.

                          Nice welds.
I run a Volvo diff in my eh, 4 wheel discs ftw.
I renewed the pivots and bushes (just standard rubber) when I put the rack and pinion in. I used rods racks, much better than the CRS option of the time. Combined with dropped stub axles, redrilled blank Hq slotted discs at the front and Koni reds all round, it turned into quite an impressive handling ride, especially considering its age.
Also threw a bigger white line sway bar in the front too.
I only ended boosting the front brakes though as I found boosting the back too was too much.

So.... I was just about ready to send off my crappy front end to get it repaired and modified for a rack when I scored a complete HR rack and pinion front end on eBay. It's never been used as the previous owner lost interest mid restoration. It has brand new everything, a shortened VB Commodore rear mounted rack, and it's been powder coated. It also comes with a modified sump and oil pump as the rack gets in the way of the original oil filter. He's also included some HQ stubs and calipers.

That just made my life a lot easier and saved me some cash too. Winner!

I spent today stripping down the Volvo diff and cutting off the mounts I don't need. I'm going to try and use the panhard rod if possible.

I'm lucky that my mate is an engineer so he's drawn up some spring mounts that we will cut out on his mill and then fold up.

I'm off to Canberra on Monday for the first round of the ARC so I'll have to mothball this for a few weeks now.
