    Operation Toy-Let...JayVee's Aristo

After some persistent bugging I’ve decided to finally start a thread over here on my Aristo. I’ve had the thing for over 5 ½ years and things have evolved as my interest in the car has.

Main build thread up until now has been on the Aristo forum (http://www.jzs147.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=279)

Interest seems to have dropped off on the Aristo site since I decided to pull out the 2JZ and install a LS1 turbo with T56 six speed so I’ll probably just post updates here now.

Quick compressed story from purchase in April 2007 till now…

Some pics not long after I bought it…just put the 19 inch rims on it. (pic sizing is shit I know)

At this stage it still had the (just) lowered springs and stock exhaust…and the engine had a bent rod. I bought the car knowing it was down on compression on one cylinder but the price was right and the rest of the car was and is still mint. I’ve only done 5000km in 5 ½ years.

So I then picked up a second hand 2J from Japan and with the help of a few mates whacked it in over a weekend.

Not long after I picked up an eManage Ultimate and a GT30R turbo, china manifold and Tial 44mm gate.

Mocked up on the old engine. Got the gate pipe repositioned to sit under the manifold.

    Time to get them on.

    More to come…

    So the GT30R didn't last long and I swapped it for a GT35R with a 1.06 rear.

Not long after that I got the shits with the second hand eManage Ultimate and ditched it in favour of a Haltech E11V2 and some Sard 800cc injectors. IIRC it was about now that I got my first MV box and 3000rpm converter after frying 2nd gear in the stock box. Had some niggly issue with it but sorted it in the end.

Took it for it's second dyno run (first was a stock 278rwhp), with the stock 440cc injectors, stock ECM, 1 bar of boost, 100mm IC and pulled a nice 378rwhp.

This was a pure baseline so I could compare with the upcoming bigger injectors and ECU.

    More to come...

Time for the 800cc injectors and E11...

Got that all in then off for a tune.

Off to Powercruise 2008 and smashed the 2nd gear sprag on my new MV's box...wasn't happy at all.

Bit the bullet and went for a 4000rpm converter and stage 3 spragless MV box as I'd hoped this would be the end of it, it wasn't.

      More to come...

So while I was waiting for the new box to come back I got bored and bought a T04Z with a 1.15 rear.

          GT35R vs T04Z

Had to swap manifolds too as the old one was a T3 and new T04Z was T4

Got the thing all plumbed up and took her out for a play down the strip. Managed a 11.94 et but a low mph of 115mph. Didn't feel right and I went looking for a problem. Found out that I'd set up the line pressure cable incorrectly (went back to a 1JZ line pressure setup in the Stage 3 spragless box), so I'd effectively cooked another MV box.

Sent the box back to MV's and he basically rebuilt it again as I'd truly hurt it.

Got it back and put it back together and run a 11.5 @ 117mph on the first run of the night...was shown the door for not having a ANDRA licence or harness and to date that's as fast as it's been.

Did one more Powercruise where my own built shift box played up then the car went on ramps for a few years while I sooked and moaned about how shit it was.

I parted out all the performance gear and bought a stock 2J for it and was just about to sell it off when I had a odd thought of converting it to an LS1 manual. Purchased a smashed VX SS for good $$$ and parted all but the engine/gearbox etc which made it even more cost effective.

          More to come...

              Let the strip down begin...

And the first signs of plans to come...she's been sitting for nearly 2 years at this stage (which is obvious given the dust depth)

              And here's the donor car..

Engine wasn't damaged in the smash...

I'll pick up from July this year...

OK…so I wheeled the POS out of the carport so that she could occupy her new home.

Just a little dust and shit from nearly 3 years on ramps.

And this is why she’s come down off the ramps…my new shed is finally up and finished. It was originally to be 10m x 10.5m but I decided to add another 3.5m bay to it so it’s now 10m x 14m.

I thought I’d better run the hose over the poor old girl before wheeling her into the new shed…she’s still got it I reckon.

And here she is in her new spot.

Anyway, sump is off to be cut and shut next time I go back out to work then engine/box back in so I can start on the mounts, wiring and tailshaft.

Removed all the foot e-brake shit the other day which opens it up nicely for the clutch pedal assembly to go in.

Spent a bit of time on the VX clutch pedal and I think it'll do the job. Had to hack a fair bit of the mounting and modify it a fair bit but I'll weld it all up and add an extra brace to connect it to the main bar that goes across under the dash for some extra strength.

Pedal needs to be tweaked a little and the brake pedal trimmed and a new rubber installed. I also need to remove some shit from behind the black foot rest to get it to sit more flush with the floor, this will allow more travel in the clutch pedal before hitting it.

Not the best pics but you should be able to see with a bend/tweak of the pedal that it's going to work OK.

Back to work tomorrow so I'll be cutting the sump and taking a bit out to clear the cross member better. Then when back home the sump can go back on and the engine back in for another fitting session.

ECM was sent off today to get a reasonable tune put in it (bigger injectors, cam, boost and remove body control shit and MAF.) Final tune will be done down the track once all the normal conversion bugs are ironed out.

Starting to get excited again now

                        Small update.

ECM back from getting a quick tune for the cam, injectors, boost, MAF-less and BCM removal etc.

Still waiting on some pushrods from the states and the 2 bar MAP sensor but the engine will go back in over the weekend so I can finalise mounts and measure up for the tailshaft.

Sump was modded at work last week...the alloy was a prick to weld but we got there in the end.

Initially I was going to try and get away without cutting the sump but I think taking a little out will have the engine sitting in a much nicer position. Probably could've mounted it up as is but it would have given me the shits over time. The small amount removed will allow the engine to sit back a bit more and give the shifter a more natural position in the cab.

Another day spent on the ole' girl and now I'm very happy with how the clutch pedal is mounted.

I spent a lot of time messing with and strengthening the pedal assembly and after it was all done I wasn't happy with it. The pedal was in and functioning ok but after a good hard think about it all it was too close to the tranny tunnel..unfortunately didn't get a pic.

Anyway, here's the day's efforts...taking into account I was using my new MIG for the first time and trying wire feed and voltage settings for the first time

I ended up cutting the foot off the pedal, heating up the leg of the assembly and bending into place then welding the foot back on. I made up a new bracket that picks up the main pedal box (welded it to the box), and bolts to one of the steering bolts on the firewall...braces up the whole assembly nicely. Pretty happy with the placement, strength and range of movement of the assembly now

Just need to remove the brake pedal now and cut it down to size, will be getting new VX rubbers for the brake and clutch pedals so they match.

Engine goes back in tomorrow and if I can stay sober enough I should be able to make up the engine mounts and tranny cross member.

                            Anyway...progress for the night (morning).

Last count was the engine/box went in and out 5 times while trying new things and "massaging' the tunnel to get a better fit. It's back in and in a position good enough for me to start fabbing up the mounts (engine is still sitting is little high in the pics as she's resting on blocks.)

The elephant in the room is the exhaust issues this thing is going to have. The passenger side is not going to be an issue...but the drivers side is a fucking shitfight. I have a stock set of LS1 exhaust manifolds, a stock set of LS2 manifold and a set of block huggers and no matter which way I go (normal orientation or reversed), the outlet of the manifold/extractors fouls badly on something. If installed in the normal way the outlet points straight at the starter or steering box, reversed they all foul or point at the A/C compressor. I'm choosing not to get too carried away with it at the moment but I can see that I'll probably have to fabricate a custom drivers side manifold which is going to suck bad.

                            Some pics of the night.

EDIT: Imageshack is being shit and I'm too pissed to work it out

OK, big Saturday in the shed.

Pulled my finger out and got all the mounts finished. Added some bracing to the drivers side mount, made a new passengers side mount and started from scratch on the gearbox mount.

                              Some progress pics:

Passenger side engine mount coming together (drivers side mount to the left before I added further bracing)

You can see the temp brace I welded on in situ to hold the two bits together for final welding.

Passenger side mount finished (paint later), and in place. Commodore mounts bolted through normal Aristo crossmember holes.

Fuck knows why Imageshack rotated this image but it shows the A/C compressor removed and the LS2 exhaust manifold fitted in reverse with the outlet in a nice spot to exit gasses through a 2.5" pipe up into the turbo.

Passenger side manifold with the Alternator removed.

                              Gearbox crossmember getting all pretty.

Some shots with it in place doing it's job.

This pic shows how the A/c compressor and Alternator will be mounted. Going through the motions of finding the best brackets at the moment but ultimately this is what they're going to achieve.

Also, removed the fuse/relay box so I can modify the box and mount it forward just behind the head light.

New Aeromotive pump turned up and so did the fuel reg. Heading off this week to get tailshaft made up and to get the Torsen centre put into a spare diff I have. Staying with the 3.79 ratios now as the taller ratio will help build boost quicker.

Pretty damn motivated to get this thing turning tyres asap
