The drama didn't stop with the cam...

Another head was brought in with a few of the guys coming from Newcastle (cheering) head was due to arrive around 1pm with the show and shine at 9am and the motorkhana starting at 2pm what elce was I gonna do but put my shitbox back together enough to look like a car with and engine and washed it, then tow the non running shitter down for the show and shine (actually ended up winning best lift back!)

Tow back to the accomodation and pull her back apart again for when the head arrived (perfectly timed arrival I might add) quickly rip all the shims out of the second hand head and realise I have nothing to measure them with

Off to autobarn to buy an excessively overpriced set of Vernier's as the didn't even know what a micrometer was...

Pick the best shim and put the head back together (first shim used was the same thickness as the original) turned out to be within tolerance so ran with it! Car started and ran beautiful so put the bonnet back on and rushed out of town to the Dubbo stock yards where the motorkhana was held with enough time to get a few runs in before the car just randomly stalled in line and had no dash light any more and wouldn't restart (turned out it blew the fuse for gauges and ECU supply) and after many hours of ducking around in the stock yards pulling the car apart in an attempt to find the short it magically disappeared without me fixing anything (fucking cunt) so put in a new fuse and ran the car back to the accomodation in town.

Ran the 30mins out to Wellington and raced all day at the 1/8th mile drags today without missing a beat and the only real problem was traction on the goat track surface managed to come second to Joseph in his mental 1jz Cressida he wen a best oft 7.01 and I went best of 7.29.

Actually in our final side by side grudge match the car went into engine protection off the line and I had like a 20 second pass was a ripper of a day tho!!!

I'm trying to work out if you've had your three shit things go wrong yet? Sounds like you made the best of a shit run though and luckily Dubbo is more than just the cars 😊

What's the plan now? Happy enough it's all good?

The bonnet also tried to fall off when I checked the fluids after the drags... that count as a third? The hinges have been flogged for a while and it wasn't even the rivet I expected to go that popped out! The only lower and forward was the one I expected to fail as it's like half pulled through.

A bloke in the states is doing reproduction bonnet hinges with ball bearings and bolt together instead of the factory rivet style so I would like to get my hands on a set! Only down side is they are nearly $400AU landed! But they seem to be the goods according to the ppl I know who have purchased them.

Thanks Vito, glad I actually got to do done driving and it made it home under its own power non the less.

Justin the water to intercooler in my case was working really well! At the drags was probably the worst it's gonna be due to the long times sitting around with the car not running and the engine bay heat soaking everything but it was consistently around 40ish degrees and getting to the low 50's during the run, so A LOT BETTER than before! Especially considering I'm running more boost as well! But I'm still limited by my lack of heat exchanger :/ boss keeps telling me to buy a man sized car I keep telling him man sized cars go slower ;p and I'm dedicated to the celica cause hahaha

Awesome news thanks for the feedback. I have had some many "stories" of these systems not working and dont bother.

Good to hear. My intake temps hit high 70s at the top of a run and it starts to pull ignition timing so if I can keep the temps same as you at 50 that would be perfect.....alas I also have a "man" sized car and engine bay lol

another small cooler core submerged in an esky full of ice and water in the back and just switch from the front heat exchanger as you stage...

Totally agree that would keep temps down but I don't like the idea that if I pull up next to your brand new AMG at the lights I want to smoke it without having to say "oi follow me to the servo so I can grab some ice and then we can race" lol

Justin it seems to work well but it's more complicated than air to air and if you have the space for a larger air to air core they are apparently better, but I was so restricted out the front that this was just the best answer for MY CAR.

or just make/obtain a funnel to dump a kg of ice into your water tank.
This is a post i wrote by mistake, which is nice...

could use A/C or TEC cooler to chill the water, the only concern is weight...

Interchiller and reso of cool chilled water is the ultimate end game all in the engine bay / guards but that will be after I have the aircon working properly for myself first hahahaha

O*c intake temps here I come :p hahahaha

Just strap a bag of dry ice to the thing, that'll do it 😊

Putting a ice box in mine would be pretty simple as the space is there in the boot, but as you have said the end game is air con cooling as well

ice box would be good on DC to keep the beers cool

So who has more experience with DOHC valve spring selection than me?

After the shim issue I'm thinking the standardo valve springs (or even just one of them) have probably had the dick but my car fund is totally drained at the moment so I really need to prioritise my next steps!

I want to eventually go to a larger set of cams (maybe 272*?) and don't want to do things twice and would also like to do a shimless bucket conversion (not worth doing until I change cams as the tolerances will probably change) so for now I would like to see if some better valve springs and titanium retainers can help the current setup.

Looking back when I built this engine and had this engine tuned the first time it made peak power at about 8700 then a retune later and it made power to only like 8400 and then most recently before Toyota nationals it made peek power at 8100 and I didn't really put that much thought into it until it spat the shim and then I was left thinking about why??

So trying to do a little research on valve springs and what to choose, but it's a bit of an unknown to me so any help or genuine information would be appreciated

Not interested in "performance springs" the brand as I have had one fail on me and smashed my first engine to pieces.

After your shim experience I bought a set of 'performance springs' ($250) and currently have my engine stripped to put them in. Not help to you though. While shopping I did notice you can currently get Brian Crower springs and titanium retainers for around $370 delivered which seems like good value.
