I hope so. Finding one on the right spec is the challenge. Not black, manual, sports chrono, bi xenons, later than 2006.

Then the mods start. GT3 front control arms, third radiator, deep sump, more oil cooling..

Z4M coupe and lotus exige the two outside possibilities..

Ticking the Porsche box is a much greater life goal than ticking the bmw/lotus box imho

I thought you decided that the Chrono was not worth the extra coin as you could "flash" the basic S to get the same stuff?

Afaik the S has bigger brakes and slightly different suspension

Yeah, but if it's there and already on the car, then why not...

Mx5 now has new road boots and new nankang AR-1s for the track.

Now to find time to get to the track!

                  Wnb the Z4MC...
The only thing it really has going for it is the driving position, CSL discs, CSL rack. It uses a bunch of E36/E46 parts on the front suspension. The rear suspension is unique with a few parts plucked from the E36/E46.
Other than that, the only real up on the M3 is the rear floor doesn't tear itself apart.

So ran this at Wakefield and met Mr Punanny in the Echo/Vitz... which is a really cool car..

Ended up doing 119 laps during the day including one stint of 42 laps in a row, and a couple of others at 20 + . Car ran cool all day, brakes perfect, no fade, good pedal all day with the Carbotechs..

Handling balance is sooo much better now... I could actually trail brake into turn 2 and the fishhook. I drove pretty aggressively- and was bouncing off kerbs, and stuff all day... hilariously good fun... never spun, but had a few off track excursions at the exit of turn 2 and just kept the foot into it rallycross style, and rejoined the track.

Ended up according to Natsoft at 1.13.5 which is comfortably 2 seconds faster than I've run before with the Cusco installed. Racechrono with the Qstarz 10 Hz has me at 1.13.1 repeatedly with a optimal of 1.12.76 - which was in reach on one particular lap except a got on the gas too early out of turn 11 and sent the car into a big oversteer slide .

AR-1s were great- progressive and much grippier than anything I've run previously.

Got dive bombed by a couple of TCR cars- Jordan Cox in the Alfa and Morcom on the Hyundai (which lost a wheel at one point) as well as a sick lambo…

Causalities for the day were the front hub bearings- they have cried enough. I intended to go and run another 30 + laps to round out the day, but alas the car developed a massive vibration in corners, so couldn't do that.

Also managed to lose the right front inner guard liner and at some point the front right wheel as met the guard at full compression with lock on putting a slight kink in it..

There was a guy with an NB8b there on RS4 who couldn't do better than 1.15.5.

There was a Cayman S there running around very sedately in the mid 1.13s .. really liked the car.

The interesting thing on the way home was I was thinking that if I had a Cayman I couldn't push it like I push the MX-5... it'll be too nice, too high cost to fix... interdasting conundrum.. it's almost like I need two cars.... a Cayman S for 'good' and an MX-5 or 86 for beating on like a redheaded stepchild...

Thats basically the Guido conundrum. After thrashing an 86 recently im more sold on the MX5 as a cheap (or not so) thrash car.

That's exactly why I bought the MX5. They'll never be the quickest car at the track but you can abuse the crap out of it and it keeps coming back for more. If you hit a wall it's not going to be a massive bill, nor would you be upset about destroying a rare car.

A mate has an E36 M3 for sale, I'd love to tick that box, but I can't justify setting fire to $30k by tracking one hard. And while it'd be much quicker, it'd be harder on the consumables and I doubt any extra fun has would be outweighed by the extra expense.

the appeal of an 86 to me is exclusively the roof, as it opens up tarmac S1 rallysprints without needing a full cage which is extra expense in an mx-5 & reduces usability for silly weekend shenanigans They are also just that little bit quicker in a straight line...
