I am down at the island. Weather is a bit stupid, it rained most of the way down, but not much here. It's humid and now very windy.
I pushed it on the scales at the track, it weighed 957kg's with over 3/4 fuel - no driver.
Pretty happy considering it's got a full cage, oem doors with all electrics. I am pretty confident it will be close to 900kg when it's finished.
On my way back to the house from the track I decided to bed in the brakes so I don't waste a session in the morning.
Wow, unbelievable how good this car stops. If my commodore could stop like that I would be so happy (and fast).
It's running stock brakes all round, braided brake lines and Hawk Blue pads. With another 50kgs out of it and a good aero package this is going to be one awesome endurance race car. I hope to crack a 1:53 tomorrow morning. But will settle for a trouble free day.

I really dig the hard top.

Makes me think about the old bullet mx5s and how good they would have looked with something similar

Cheers, I will have one on all my cars. I never bought the MX5 for the soft top, they are a great, cheap, fun little car that can embarrass plenty of "better" cars on the track.
I have washed it and mounted the camera and data logged gear. All set for the morning.

What camera and data logger gear do you use?

Just a GoPro camera. Data logger is my old phone with RaceChrono app, and a transponder to speed up the signal to get accurate data. Total cost for data logging was $50. Gives all info except G's. Even has sectors with a green or red box that you can easily see. Green means fastest time in that sector.

The car had an issue with fuel pick up, so I kept the tank full. But otherwise the car was amazing.
It's so much fun driving a slow car fast, holding flat at 196km/h into turn 1 and not lifting until turn 2 entry. I struggled to go under 1:53 most of the day, but got a best of 1:52.6. The tyres are too old and bald to keep it under a 1:53 consistently, it takes some big balls or stupidity to push it that hard. I had a ball, and that's why it's so hard to get away from these cars.
And... The car did 44 laps today. That's about 1.5hrs on the track flat out. Very good value.

Here is a dodgy video showing the almost flat line around turn 1. What it doesn't show is how exciting it feels to be on the limit at close to 200km/h with 3 year old bald R specs and no wing.It did step out once when the Chief was behind me in his Skyline. He said he saw it leave 2 big black lines as the yaw angle exceeded the normal limits.
The reason the speed drops even holding it flat is due to tyre scrub.

I can confirm this man is a freaking lunatic and was sideways at 190+ km/h leaving 2 black lines through turn 1, pure insanity.

I thought i captured the footage on my cam but unfortunately i forgot to turn the bloody thing on. Soz lightyear.

Pity you have no video. Maybe it's time for some new tyres. It's amazing how much grip difference there is between the two rear tyres. It does erk me not having a faster car on the day, as in one of the turbo MX5's or even the Commodore. This is my slowest track car after all. But to get a 1:52 on its first outing with basic mods shows I know how to get these cars to work. Most MX5 guys spend a long time trying to crack the 2:00 minute mark.

Shows that you also really know how to drive. Thanks for letting me follow you and showing me some interesting lines. You definitely use every millimetre of the track and then some. No ripple strip or grass blade is safe. That thing is lightning on turns but looks like brakes on down the straight.

I finished the day with a best of 1.53 4 which is a pb for me. Im happy with that. The laps i was following you i did a 53.7 but race chrono showed a theoretical best of 52.5. So your lines definitely helped me, i was just losing time down the straight trying not to pass you, lol.

It's never going to be a straight line car. But it's going to cut some quick laps for a 90kw car when it's finished. My goal is sub 1:50 with no engine or ECU mods.
You can start guessing my sanity now. After all that work getting the car back together I do this.

It was about 2:00pm today (Sunday arvo), I thought I should jack the car up so it might motivate me to work on the car when I get spare time. I ended up stripping it in about an hour including the fiddly little bits. Went out for a bit, did dinner, then thought I might do a bit more. 4 hours later, it's fully masked, sanded and ready for paint.
Pity I can't just get onto it as I have other work to do
But I might have some time after lunch or maybe dinner tomorrow to lay the paint on.
I have too many cars to work on, plus houses. So figured I will try and do nights in the garage till 10 or so until I get fatigued. It's the only way things are going to get done. A solid 4 hours after dinner each night makes a massive difference.

Could be, lol. It is south from here. It's actually a huge J shape to drive there because of the (flat water). If only it was a more direct run. It's about 1.5 hours from my place.

It had to be the windiest day. I thought it might slow down, so started late this arvo, only to have dust and dirt blow around and under the garage door. :/
I have washed down all the other body parts ready to sand.

For now it can cure before I do anything else to it. And black is a shit of a colour to photograph.
