    Bringing back the fun with a Nissan.

    I've been desperately craving a fun car to drive for a long time now. Not necessarily a fast car, but a car that would put a smile on my face every time I drove it. Something I could take out for a back road blast and listen to it sing its lungs out at many revolutions per minute as I vigorously row through the gearbox. A car that would give a pure driving experience with no aids like ABS or traction control or esp crap to interfere. Something on the lower end of the weight scale.
    James May calls it "The Fizz". That's it. That's what I want.

    So what to buy then? Budget? Not much. I wanted something like an old Datto or Corolla with Webbers, or maybe an MX5?
    I spoke to my older brother about my ideas. He likes cars, but is not a car guy and never really had a project car. But he did have an AE82 Corolla twin cam as a first car many years ago, and really missed that little revvy ball of fun.

    So now both of us want the same thing. Let's go halves then. We both get a car, pay half price and get to bond building it together. I quickly ruled out buying anything wrong wheel drive, so no Corolla twin cam or Levin 20v. What about a KE/AE Corolla with a 4AGE swap? That could work. So we look at a couple. One had a wicked sounding 20v with open trumpets, but it was a rusty, overpriced old shit box.

    Then I thought "Why not an S13 Silvia, but no turbo, just some quad throttle bodies and some trumpets instead?". Now I do have a fair bit of S13 experience, and just happen to own a 180sx that has been a drift car for 10 or so years. But it's a bit tired body wise, and the SR20DET is a bit broken, and it's very far from being able to drive on the street. It does have many good parts on it that could be re-purposed though. So after a bit of time trying to convince my brother that a Silvia is the way to go, we started looking for an N/A S13, specifically an auto. My thinking is, an auto has less chance of being thrashed or fucked with because no flat brims will want one because it wont drift.

    After looking around we settled on a Juniper green example nearby to home. This one is a little different though. It's actually a factory turbo/auto Silvia K's that somebody for some reason has dropped in an SR20DE. So it has the top spec model bits like climate control and sunroof, R200 short nose LSD diff but with the engine we wanted. Coolio.

    So this is it. The body was rough. The bonnet and boot were different colours and the paint was a bit feral, so was all the dozens of little parking dents all over.
    But underneath all that it was a very solid and honest car.





    When we were buying it, I noticed straight away it had a misfire when the guy first started it. He reckoned it went away when you drove it. So we did. And it misfired. Of course it did. But I suspected it was a spark issue, so we took a punt and bought it anyway. Got it home and first thing I did was pull the coils out to find these:



    There's your problem. Cracked from asshole to breakfast. Dropped in the coils from the 180 and all was well. Thank fuck for that.

    That's interesting. It's got a CAS and coilpacks. DEs are normally a distributor and leads. I'm guessing they left the DET ignition system in it, since it's an easy upgrade.

    Some headers and Poncams will wake it up a bit.

      At the time I could have sworn DE's had a dizzy and leads. Then I saw this and was confused and thought maybe I was wrong.


      So the basic plan is this:
      Fit all the adjustable suspension bits from the 180 into this.
      Fit the seats and flocked dash too.
      Pull the gearbox and clutch setup from the 180 and whack all that in.
      Swap the 3.9 diff for the 4.3 diff, again from the 180.
      Buy a bolt on quad throttle setup specifically for an SR from EFI hardware.
      Buy some 270 degree cams and headers (headers are already in the post) and chuck them on, then pinch the Haltech pro plug in SR ECU from the 180 and get it tuned by somebody.

            So before all that fun engine stuff happens, the ugliness needed attending to. And straight away we're looking for some wheels to replace the old DR30 Skyline rims on it.
            And we settle on these:



            Impul Pro Mesh, by Hoshino, WITH optional aero covers. Made in 1983 and in the eye watering size of 15x6.5 inch.
            No 19x12in -20 rims here like most guys run. That's not what this car is about. We're going about it a different way.
            And this is effectively 2 sets of wheels in one with 2 very different looks. Because underneath those covers it's just plain old mesh wheels.

                Which would be pretty obvious to spot, because 9 times out of 10, it's a Bunnings-spec UNC bolt cross-threaded into the hole with teflon tape.

                Digging the Impuls. Long-time fan of the brand. I've got a couple of random pairs kicking around, if you want to change shit up a bit.

                  You may have noticed the Bride seats in those pics. They were from the 180, and we steamed cleaned those and the Silvia carpet and rear seats before fitting them in.




                  Here's the flocked dash and centre console that will be coming out and swapped over soon too. The red roll cage will not.
                  The steering wheel and door trims were also swapped in.




                  Next was the HSD adjustable coilovers to replace the King Springs the Silvia came with. The adjustable arms will go in later, and then a wheel alignment.






                  Ended up a bit lower. Adjustments are still to come.

                      They're all 16s, but offsets in the mid-low 20s, so not stance-fag. One pair are 6.5s, and the others are 8s from memory. They look ok, with normal-sized tyres on them.

                        They were off at the paint shop getting painted body colour, rather than the black paint on the bonnet and the black vinyl wrapped red bootlid and manky rear bar.
                        While that was going on, fellow PF'er 'Blow' from Sydney dents came around and did a fucking awesome job popping out eleventy thousand dents from the sides of the car with some excellent PDR skills. Here are some of his before and after pics I stole from the Sydney Dents Facebook page.











                        That's just a small snapshot of what he did. He spent many hours on it, made a massive difference. Great guy. Give him a go.

                        And so now we get to this weekend just gone. My brother's good mate is a detailer on the side. He offered to give the Silvia a going over to try and tidy it up a bit more. So my brother headed out to his place and they spent Sunday doing an insane job buffing and polishing this thing to end up with this:






                        I haven't seen it in the flesh yet, it has a coating of some kind on it that needs to cure, so it's tucked away elsewhere in a garage for a few days. But holy fuck it looks sooo much better in the pictures they sent me!

                            Saw that on Rup's JDM on Faceache last night. Looks good.

                              Yeah I've been waiting for the "fit a turbo" comments.

                              It's not the sort of car we're aiming for though. Try not to think of it as a regular S13. More like an old 60's/70's sports car. Like an MG or a Fairlady etc. but with with a roof and efi and shit that works.
                              Like a modded MX5 with a back seat and no bumsex. Or a bigger AE86 without the Takumi tax.

                              I want instant throttle response and induction roar. Fun at legal speeds. I've done plenty of turbo Nissans, and had a good go in an LS2 S13. I expect this to be quite slow and low powered. But fun as hell.
