Stock bushes? I went with solid (ish) poly bushes, no voids and no metal outer sleeves.

Took the new XU1 out for a run.

Hacked and bashed away at the old bushes for a while.

The new ones needed a bit more of a chamfer ground in to get them started and then had to wind them in with a nut and bolt and some washers. Got there in the end.

The shudder from the 2 way diff has been fucking unbearable. I’ve been running the Motul 75/140 diff oil, but reading around on the net a lot of people had good results running Redline 75/90 oil. So I ordered some from Sparesbox. And waited 3 weeks for it to turn up.

Quick oil change with the old Tom Thumb pump.

Took it for a test run and it was worse. Much much worse! Fuck!

It was at about this point that I decided fuck this cunt piece of shit poofter 2 way, I’m done. I had a dig through my crate of S13 parts and pulled out the original diff from this car, 3.7:1 ratio and viscous LSD centre.

With a rattle gun and big fucking hammer I gently removed both diff centres and swapped the 4.9:1 crownwheel onto the viscous centre and reassembled the lot only to find a decent amount of backlash. I was just about to give up and drop it off at a diff shop but decided to have a go at swapping shims from side to side as they were slightly different thicknesses. The backlash improved significantly and felt the same as it was before I pulled the diff apart.

I had just enough 80/90 diff oil lying around to put it all back together and get it in the car for a test drive and…. Silence!
Sweet sweet silence. What a joy. What a pleasure. Aaaaah.

did u try some friction modifier on the diff to calm it down at all?

i had some success with about a 1/3 of a bottle of the penrite limslip additive in the cusco in my mx5

What diff centre is it? I have a KAZZ 2 way in the datto was fucking noisy and clunky so used some genuine kazz diff oil. Quiet and smooth now.

I'd have bedded it in again post oil change.

I did consider it. But then I refused to spend another cent fucking around with this diff.

Straight after replacing the rear subframe bushes I went and did some circles to try and bed the diff in again with the Motul oil. Going in one direction I could hear a metal scraping noise which I thought at the time may have been in the brakes.

After this recent oil change I went down to the giant sports ground carpark and did a shitload of figure 8s until I got dizzy. The scraping noise got infinitely worse along with the clunking, it sounded exactly like brake pads that needed replacement 5,000kms ago. I’m assuming it’s worn clutches? I’ve not bothered to find out what’s inside these dealies.

sounds like diff change is for the best.

OS.Giken or Drexler LSD's are the only ones to have for circuit laps, those other Jap ones are potentially problematical and at best are still noisy when just driving around.
                          Gimme mah $50 ya cunts.

I really only ever fitted a 2 way because I thought I’d get back into some drifting and assumed it would be a good compromise between track and street, in the past I just ran full lockers for drifting. But the reality is this car will be lucky to even see a wet skidpan for drifting now so a factory viscous piece of poo will do everything I need and in quiet and comfort.

I tested it out on some damp ground, worked well even through 3rd.

worked for me too, night and day with a Nismo gt pro 2.

Had another run at Luddenham a few weeks ago. It was a warm day with air temp in the high twenties but zero clouds all day made for a hot track lacking in grip. I’ve never seen this track littered with so many rubber marbles and pizza toppings. Everybody was getting a lot of pickup stuck to their tyres, the first decent sized chunk I got on the front left had me looking for a failed wheel bearing in the pits- it was that loud!

Of course all of this translated into some poor laptimes despite any improvements made to the car since the last day out.
I reckon I drove as good as I ever have but could only muster up a best of 57.1 seconds later in the day on a lower fuel load compared to a previous N/A powered best of 56.7 last time out.

The left rear was copping the worst of the abuse. The pressure wasn’t particularly high at 35° hot but I think the tread itself was overheating after a few hot laps and the rear stepped out a few times at speed through turn one. A bit of opposite lock and some throttle feathering sorted that once my natural drifting instincts kicked in.

Later on I was provoking it into some slides with the handbrake because I was so bored and disheartened with the poor lap times. Fuck, I miss drifting!
