Nice to see that the P1s weren't the only Volvo to have gear shift issues with the autos haha! Also an easy, but fiddly fix.

These have a loooooong intake tract post turbo. The design goes from turbo out let over the gearbox and down to the bottom of the vertical intercooler. This apparently helps prevent ice build up on the bottom of the intercooler in cold climates. It goes up through the intercooler and then comes outthe top where a radiator cap normally is and does 2 x 180 degree turns into the intake manifold.

Now the Swedish volvo tuners include snabb who do some lovely kits and charge accordingly. They worked out if you reverse the flow through the intercooler you pick up good response and better cooling in hotter climates. Their kits is pretty snoozy.

Step in one of the super cool gents on ozvolvos who sold me some other stuff and then sent me this care package as it was his spare! Thanks Lloyd !

Legend. So I spent the last hour swapping it all over which was a bit of a mission getting the old gear off, this went on perfectly. Super good kit. Will report back post road-test after dinner and kids.

Me too Greg! This things sounds better. It has maybe picked up 300-500rpm of spool and interestingly about 1.5psi of boost. 5psi now everywhere, super good midrange, even the auto bothers me less now!

Next is suspension, maybe this weekend.

                Rear suspension:

So I went with a fairly standard street setup of Sachs shocks and h and R progressive rate springs along with top hats and new bump stops as I assumed mine were going to be stuffed.

With the car jacked off the ground first spray some penetrant on this strut bolt and also the captive nuts underneath the top hat and grab a cuppa.

Click image for larger version Name:	image_125025.jpg Views:	62 Size:	1.56 MB ID:	7256282

If these seize then there is a bit of a drama as you then have to drill and tap and re weld a captive nut underneath. Fortunately mine weren't rusty.

Click image for larger version Name:	20210529_113907.jpg Views:	60 Size:	1.95 MB ID:	7256283

Next up expose the strut tops so you can undo the top nut.

The rear floor and boot seats need to come out to do this. Undo these 4 bolts, 2 per side.

Click image for larger version Name:	20210529_121535.jpg Views:	60 Size:	2.66 MB ID:	7256284 then slide the seat/floor forwards to release the clips then drag it backwards and out of the way.

Click image for larger version Name:	20210529_122439.jpg Views:	60 Size:	2.58 MB ID:	7256285 With the car back on the ground, now you need a 7 mm ring spanner or multi grips and a 15mm spanner, hold the shock top with the 7mm spanner and undo the nut almost all the way.

Lift her back in the air and put a jack or jackstand under the spring perch and lower the car down until you get some tension off the strut. Undo the strut lower bolt and remove the top nut. Compress the shock and pull it off.

Click image for larger version Name:	20210529_124704.jpg Views:	59 Size:	2.71 MB ID:	7256287
And it comes straight out. This looks to be 200000kms old. I reckon it's original.

Now undo this nut under the spring perch which holds the spring seat in place and push it up into the coils. It's 15mm.

That bump stops are cactus. Remove the rubber dust jacket, bump stop seal and pull the bump stops out so you can get the spring retainer out as both the retainer and seal will be reused. I re-greased the rubber grommet.

Put the thread through the spring retainer and make sure the locating pin is in its hole and use the jack to compress it a bit to do the bolt back up. Springs done.

Looked at the old oem bolt and you can see it has a shoulder and this holds the strut bolt centred.

Thank you sir ( sir = non easily identifiable gender specific named member ), did you used to be another name and if so what did you do? Or if you chose it, very creative!

Anyway, no sooner was this giving me feels in the arse end for the first time but it's now got an ignition issue, dammit... these are the bits I haven't bought as I thought they were solid. So now on the investigation list is

                    Rotor
                    Distributor
                    Coil

                    Then leads and plugs.

Just when it was starting to be really fun too.

Thanks Sloth, it's hilarious fun now, I don't think it'll need much more power, it just bakes a wheel or both at anything under 60kmh. Makes me laugh everytime I step on it.

Which I can do now again. Because as per my last post, for 3 days now it's been running like a bag of Dicks.

I had 15 mins spare today and Steve at glt car centre had everything I needed in stock and said it's most likely the rotor button but to do the dizzy and leads and plugs as well.

Make sure you notate the lead position as the no 2 and no 4 are the same length. For the Volvo t5 series being c70 v70 and s70 as well as 850r from 93 to 1999 this is the same firing order.

Plugs went in next. These are apparently quite sensitive to plugs and these are what the Volvo specialist local to me recommended even though the forum regulars use ngk's , these are a Bosch item, and pretty funky design! They are pre gapped so no need to do anything other than rub a bit of copper grease to keep them from binding.

He was pretty excited about using the hoist. And lost interest shortly thereafter.

Anyway, crack on, stuff to do, looks like the new ones will need to be drilled for the abs sensor. Annoying.

Put the spring tensioners on. Undo the top bolt, 22mm, exposing this cross nut.

Then using a punch tap it off. I was told to reuse the bumpstops and bumpstop cover plate along with the dust jacket. The rubber spring perch and top mount are new.

Swap these onto the new strut, decompress the old springs, compress the new h&r springs and slide the new upright into the spring. Put the rubber spring perch on and...wait. compress some more. Nope. Wtf. Compress some more. Tell son to keep away from the spring, sweat whilst trying to do it up really tight. .. this ain't right. Remove spring, compare shocks. Fuck, there's my 20mm....

confirm they are a p1 chassis shock not a p80. Make decision to stick with the Sachs touring shocks which look maybe 10 or 15 thousand kms old. Transfer everything over to old shock. Reverse procedure and reinstall.

Cooking with gas now! Do the drivers side and get it all swapped and buttoned up. Look at it. Take a picture to look up online. It doesn't look right. Reinstall it anyway whilst waiting for a volvo mate to ring me.

Him: put the little little end on the smaller strut mount.

Me: wtf, I put it in the way the logos on the springs go.

                          Him: wtf, I don't think that's right.

Me: it's seated right, just the upper spring perch looks wrong. See.

Him: is that the little little coil end? It doesn't look right.

Me: is little little English? I put the tighter coil at the top, how the text and logos on the springs sit so you can read it when it's on the car. See

Repeat, pull them out, undo the struts again, swap the springs around. Done. New ride height in shade, old in light. Probably only 1inch lower but it looks right. Feels better too, actually more supply than with the old flogged springs.

Then sorted the old man's jag out and put his shit back in his shed.

Am on the search for some wheels. Volvo type r pegasus wheels would be perfect or something like an xt7 which look similar. See how the fun account goes.

Re the old man's e he has one of these (this picture is his car) : https://www.concours.com.au/recreati...ype-recreation

3.8 alloy billet block, wide angle c&g head, e85 , 400hp at crank, 900 ish kgs.

                              And one of these: https://www.concours.com.au/recreati...rag-recreation

                              4.2 , haltech, t56, air con 200 rwkw at 5850rpm approx 1000kgs.

On the lolvo it's so funny to me that a large car like the v70/850 is such a small car today. Sure its a fair bit longer but here she is next to a Mitsubishi colt 🤣
