    Learner life-Bora $motion

With the painful discovery that the eldest of the gruesome twosome is now old enough to get his learners, nopics and I decided we needed something for him to learn in. The requiments were, manual, powerful enough to get out of trouble, safe, large enough for the boy, bloody kids being bigger than their parents and cheap. Last year I had found a dirt cheap Mazda 121 Metro at the hail auctions awhich I ended up getting, $336 after fees. Good car which still owes me less than $1000 excluding rego/insurace/fuel. But it's an auto.
His cousin in Brisvegas had decided an Impreza RX with a WRC wing would be a perfect first car so we started looking along those lines. While trawling through FB market place I found this

Yep 2003 VW Bora V4 4Motion, with only 160,000km on the clock. And cancelled rego due to collecting a defect for tinted rear lights and missing rear muffler. It also had a non opening passenger front door and a couple of other issues.
First things first, sort the tail lights, being a ROW model it has the worst tail lights used on the 1J platform, all red. Sourced a set of brand new GLI "candycane" lights from RockAuto, just need to drill the driver side rear foglight.

    Much better.
Next task was sort the passenger front door. Since it was jammed closed I had to strip the door with it still closed, not as bad as it sounds. After alot of messing around discovered the latch assembly had died internally, cue extreme measures:

After levering the bejesus out of it finally got the thing open, yes I have hammered the door frame back into shape. Had to get it open ASAP due to getting a new windscreen and cowl deflector fitted. Once opened found it had the older type latch, ordered new one from the dealer and happy days.
Managed to get everything buttoned back up after getting 2 new screws to hold the latch to the door, broke one and managed to loose the door handle retianing screw which is unlisted by VW.
Next task is get the exhaust sorted, NO off the shelf systems available for it anywhere in the world so it'll be getting a custom axle back setup, then rego. Sorting the headliner can wait until it's up and running.
Fuck it sounds good at the moment though

Don't tempt me, probably fit better than a Mazda KL would.
I'm already looking at who does forced induction for the Bora for when the boy decides he wants something else.

I used to muck around with VR6's a few years back. A friend of mine has been pushing the limits on stock motors - has trapped 134mph and still not sent the rods out of the block. Great first car.

Negative. Only 4th generation Golf/Bora that came turbo are the 1.8L petrol 4 banger (GTI motor) or diesel afaik. And AWD/4motion only for the NA V6s. It wasn't until the Golf R came along in later generations that you could get AWD and turbo in the same car. ... or you could buy an Audi with the 1.8T and AWD.

If you remove the T25 Torx screw from that gold locking lever and pull the internal release cable, the whole thing falls to bits and the door will open.

Have a Golf in the front yard if you need bits and pieces.

I'll remember that when the others fail, I have no doubt they will because Mk4. Not the first time I've done a door latch on one of these but the first time I've had one actually fail internally, I replaced a few due to electrical failures when they were new. Was surprised to see the speaker was still riveted onto the regulator plate, I suspect it's the original window regulator since no one bothered riveting the speaker onto the new plates, not when you usually replaced the bloody thing 6 months later.

Lol, what you can't see is the other car in the family fleet, nopics' Citroen C5 V6HDI, so yeah painful/expensive car ownership is something he's already aware of.

I had a soft spot for these when new. I think the v5 4Motion though which may be a generation earlier?, although it was a long time ago. I don’t know if I could go there now, although parts and info availability indicate that it wouldn’t be the dumbest idea known to the human race.

If you want to play CANBUS hacking games there’s a heap of people tinkering, maybe a thing if the young man has an interest in programming/microcontrollers etc.
