    Ron Burgundy Z

Can't remember the last time I started a car thread or even updated any of them so this is probably a test as much as anything.

While looking for bits to finish other projects Facebook marketplace did it's neverending trick of throwing up bargains on things I wasn't looking for at prices I can't resist.

    And now I have this:

(I don't know if the images from my phone will show here)

A 1988 Nissan z31 300zx S2 California Turbo. 1 of 200 sold in Australia, by all accounts a one owner car from new (other than the young bloke I nabbed it off), a bunch of options thrown at it and in general great condition all over. Stock as a rock mechanically, completely unmodified other than a shit headunit and some questionable stick on woodgrain internally. Has also copped some delicious purple velour 50th anniversary seats. Body is in exceptional condition, no rust that I've found, a few minor paint blemishes consistent with sitting around for a long time.

Will endeavour to dig up the back story on it but as far as I can work out the car was parked up many years ago by the original owner for some reason and the fuel tank rusted itself to bits over time causing it to be a non runner. Said young fella lived a few doors up, offered the PO a few dollars to drag it away and set about trying to fix it, replaced the tank and pump, brake lines etc but stalled out trying to get it to run. Gave up, advertised it for sale and I was right place, right time guy (for fucking once!)

Got it home, rolled it off the trailer and forgot about it for a week while I was turboroosting Fraser Island doing Pajero things.

Spent an hour on it the other night checking things over, discovered the goose had forgotten to plug the fuel pump and level sensor for the new tank in. Put 20l of fuel in, checked the pump operation and filter wasn't clogged (brand new, with the tank going in obviously), cranked it over and drove it into the shed.

    Win πŸ™‚.

Ran like garbage because the plugs were rancid, and I think a few injectors are munted so have the top end off at the moment sorting that and deleting all the unnecessary stuff like EGR and extra waterlines before doing a full service.

Plans are to fix what's broken and make it a runner, a few paint tidy up bits, new intake/exhaust to replace the factory stuff that's haggard from sitting, classic rego, cruise and enjoy.

As a young whipper snapper, I used to lust after these something chronic.

A guy down the street owned one, in two tone gun metal/silver, with targa top, and it was quite possibly the coolest thing in the world

All of them here have rusted back into the earth due to our lovely coastal salt spray, and I honestly have not seen one in at least 15 years.

Cant wait to see what you do to her, and congrats on the nice find, and the subsequently painless process of getting it to run...heres hoping this is how things will continue with it once you have the injectors cleaned and ignition updated

Love these and anything in the Z family.

I think this is probably the 2.0lt turbo, but if its the 3.0lt they were prone to engine fires from leaky injectors, worth checking.

When you get sick of it let me know.

                      Hose tail injectors?

Yeah, consider those a consumable for fire reasons.

Based on the pop up lights in that pic, suggest a name change to Forest Whitaker.

Mate of mine had a 200ZR stroked out to 2.3L with external gate, the thing was a monster. Have a video of it on the dyno somewhere.
Not many of this series of Z getting around, nice work!

Trying to multiquote reply on a phone appears impossible.

Not my first Z rodeo, learnt a lesson or two the hard way but seem to be able to keep them together pretty reliably these days. (Thanks Cam ya fuckhead πŸ™‚)

Hosetails definitely getting a professional once-over if not going in the bin completely. Will update with some more pics when I'm back in the shed.

Has some electrical issues and an earth leak that turns the lights on as soon as a battery is connected hence the wonky lights, almost certain it's going to be a rooted ancient alarm hidden in the dash.
