New engine or sell and new car

So the 80 looks like it needs a new engine. Granted it's done 500,000km and is petrol/gas it still runs beautifully, it's just getting smokey. c/o second hand engine is about $4000 fitted with 6 months warranty.

Do I cut my losses and try selling the car for $5,000 (owes me probably $9,000) as is. Still rego'd has had the diffs, hubs, transfer, clutch, a/c, new ADRAD radiator, LPG redone, new suspension, TV, DVD, GPS etc done. Typical 80 dodgy bonnet & roof paint, but it is a great car, tows like a champ and is comfy and slow which is good for demerit points.

Id doubt youd get 5k for it with a fucked motor and such high km. Petrol 80s arent the easiest things to shift when they are running!

Either sell it (might be worth 3k?), chuck a chev in it, or get al to stop fucking around and chuck his duramax in it.

I would be weighing up cost of a replacement vehicle against spending $4k on something that does what you want very well, by all accounts.
With that in mind I would lean towards fixing what you have have. (Personal bias showing here!)
LS1 would be nice too, but dunno about cost effective!

$4k is supply and fit c/o engine with warranty. I'm a mechanic so I'd do it myself normally, but I'm just too bloody busy right now. I called a couple of places to see how much a sump and head off rings and bearings job would be and they quoted me $6000 LOL WTF

If its not smoking bad, then just keep driving it till it gets worse.
The head probably needs to be reconditioned as they tend to flog out from running LPG, and the bottom ends are fairly strong.

For $4k, couldnt you get a bit of a freshen up of the engine? Reco head and possibly chuck some new rings in it?

I got the head done up in my 100 series for around $2k.

this is true, although with 500,000km on it you have to wonder how much longer the trans, transfer, diffs, various suspension and steering components, have left in them.
