    Ex Army trailers as off road trailers

    With the whole family getting closer to coming out camping/touring I'm toying with the idea of an off road trailer. Would like a Patriot but don't have 50k.

    Are the ex Army ones any good as a base?

    Would just have a frame to mount a roof top tent, a couple of jerry holders, and maybe throw on a couple of trail bikes or a quad.

    No idea but Grays Online often has them up as part of their ex-Military auctions along with lots of other cool shit. You'd have to assume they'd be fairly over enginerref

      Yeah, a few punters here have built off road trailers out of them.

      Add a battery, water tank, tap outlet on the side, roof top tent from 4wd super centre, done.

      The problem is they got popular so you end up paying too much for them.

        Australian Frontline Machinery sell them through Grays Online. Saw a couple go for ~$1500.

          Have come across a few blokes locally who've done just that. They've all retained the pintle hook coupling and a couple have also retained the NATO wiring, mainly because they pull them with Perenties which have all that stuff already. The other couple of blokes have normal flat plugs, not sure if it's a simple plug swap or a full rewire. One bloke reckons when it's all said and done it's probably line ball with buying a good off road rated box trailer and doing all the camper mods to it, he admitted his ex army trailer was cheap but beaten to shit.

            Depending on what you buy - You will possibly need to change over the
            Coupling (may have a ring-feeder style)
            Wiring (Different type of plugs)
            Hubs (some have the 10 stud truck rims and will be PITA to get spares etc)
            Brakes (Override or electic or air brakes etc)
            Lights - (make sure not "black out style army convoy lights - or 24V)

              Be aware that they're primed in Zinc Chromate, don't breathe that shit in when you're stripping it.

                Given how much DIY you'd be up for I dunno if i'd bother if I didn't get the trailer for $500 or so .

                    A good one is only a grand or so at the auctions. You're looking for a No.5 1/2 ton trailer. In army speak all capacities are halved for offroad use (or something like that).

                    It will have a ring feeder coupling and a NATO lights plug and land rover stud pattern 5x6.5inch.

                    If you can weld etc itd be a good start for a poor mans patriot style gear hauler.

                      Ronny Dahl has one. He may have a build thread coming up soon. Dunno exactly. 4wd West Australia or similar.
                      If you watch his YouTube channel you would fink I was close an that.

                        So this is back on the agenda. I've gone off the idea of an ex Army one after doing some research. As said above starting with a proper off road box trailer will be similar dollars and I think will be a better end product.

                        So who makes good off road trailers in NSW? Just need a box trailer that can fit a side by side quad. I'd like proper independent suspension over leafs (leaves?) and a solid axle. This thing will get hammered.

                        Overall dimensions of a side by side are around 280(L)x150(W).

                          Iíve been through this. I ended up making my own, and have made a few since.
                          *I use a good quality alloy drop side tray, cheap to get easy to modify may already have ladder racks etc.
                          *The main chassis is a triangular section RHS that extends from hitch to rear leaf spring hangers. Below this section is a front cross member that picks up front spring mounts. Simple light and gives excellent drawbar ramp over which is off-road trailers main prob.
                          *long single or dual/parabolic springs are used. Either Oem or custom, Oem better. These become more of a trailing arm with a coil spring mounted at axle position to carry main weight, easy to fine tune if you always carry a similar weight. You want the softest suspension that will carry the weight- gives best droop travel which is what you need. Have used airbags as well for trailers that vary in weight a lot, more adjustable but expensive in a rolling type and prob not as reliable.
                          *I really donít rate the independent setups for a heap of reasons.

                          *I use a fabled axle with same brakes bearings etc as tow car. Latest one has air over hydraulic brakes.
                          *Standard trailer axles are pretty shit, mainly due to steel quality/ bearings. Even a ďheavy duty axleĒ with SL ford or parallel bearings look hilariously small with a 4wd wheel on them.

                          I can take photos if you want, but Iím sure you get the gist.

                              A cheap 7x4 trailer already setup has popped up and I'm looking at it tonight. Not sure how robust the suspension will be but if I kill it I know what not to do next time.
