With any luck if it has a complete service history with holden they might honour the warranty. they were looking at it with my 4wd when it shat a clutch 2 months after the warranty ended and about 10 000km short of the limit, but the previous owner didnt service it through holden so they said no.
    yep

Looks like it might actually be something simple and bizarre..

I'll post this arvo if it turns out right.

      Cheers

they will probably find that the guy didn't use geniuine holden air freshener inside the car therefore the whole warrranty is void

Over that the intercooler hose sucks closed and it falls on it's face.
I drove a hatch-version of the first gen models and I felt it was like that with the turbo in perfect working condition. The torque-spread is very linear.

Well thanks firstly for your help guys.

Turns out that it is a bizarro issue that is easy to fix. The hose from the intercooler to the inlet manifold was collapsing because it is a soft piece of crap. The tiny amount of vacuum that it pulls before the turbo starts spooling is enough to collapse the hose and then vacuum holds it closed for good. He took the hose off and fitted it a little differently and now it doesn't collapse and the car goes fine again.

Replaced the airfilter and ordered a new hose and that looks like it is what it was.. Apparently the new ones have a hard plastic pipe instead of soft rubber hose so that might be part of the reason..

He reckons the actuator is pretty easy to move by hand so I am running him through adjusting a bit more preload on it this arvo.

            Thanks again!

nice work.... be careful with oldskool boost upgrades, the ecu will shit in your pocket if you increase the boost.

talk to turblue on the opelaus forums... at least a handful have the reflash which supposedly turns the car into a rocket.

the new AH turbo has the solid pipe between the trottle body and the cooler. just make up a new section in stainless or order the new ABS plastic one from holden

                Interesting.
I wonder how many of the other three that "killed a turbo" had bad hoses..

I bet your mate's glad he asked you to look at it rather than ask someone to overhaul the turbo

Yep, and after replacing the turbo for $$$, they discover that the problem is still there, and then find out that the hose was revised..

Ah, it's easy to be a cynic.
