-engine management software is windows only
-I don't want to have to code shit
-satnav software that works on linux, never heard of one
    -radio/tv tuner?

Its funny cause new bmw 6 series runs a satnav system that uses windows 98 embedded to run it.

Don't make this a windows vs linux war unless you have solutions for these problems, cause i'm not going to listen.

      pfft, a war? it's called a discussion

i could never get the boot time of windows (with hibernation) to match my linux setup, and i was always going to code stuff to make it work exactly how i wanted.

without a touch screen, the best idea i could come up with was using/modding a numpad only keyboard - gives a good number of buttons, acceptable size, very easy to work with etc.

Last year I did a custom install in a xr6t since I didnt want to cut up the dash as there was no where to fit a DIN job. I used a mini EDEN 1ghz chipset motherboard, 7inch touchscreen, but what made it kewl was I used a USB Powermate volume controller, and a external USB wireless lan adapter, 24 bit external 6 channel sound card, mounted next to the amp. Played dvd's in crystal clear sound. Used good amp setup with subs and 4 replacement high quality speakers. In dash DVD/CD burner and external USB connections etc
Theres heaps you can do with these systems, it seems the more you research and find stuff on the net, the more cool gadgets you can order and add to your project. Remote control IR, Phone connection for internet on the road etc. I used to be able to get webpages on the go with the GPRS net connection. Autospeed.com did a story on my car last year, look for the xrt6 computer story.

ok here it is i found it http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_2773/article.html

Bios cold boot time = 5 seconds

Boot time using hibinate from OS starting to load (no bios time) with frodoplayer playing music = 8 seconds.

Boot time using cold boot from OS starting to load (no bios time) with frodoplayer playing music = 32 seconds.

Yet to defrag, so may help the times.

These times have been done from a 5400rpm 2.5" HD. So not exactly a speedy drive. I'm having some issues with the compact flash card. I've had to order to a new adapter from america, which I hope fixes the problem.

Playing DIVX movies uses on average 40% cpu power. seen spikes of 55-60%. Was playing movies over wireless and it was tops, no jerkieness at all.

The screen shown is not the one i'll be using, it was a spare I had laying around, but its the same size as the one I'll be using.

i've got one in the works at the moment. almost the same setup as yours but i'm going to use a compactflash drive for the OS - hopefully that gets booting and hibernating etc a little faster. one day when i get the time I'll finish building it...

Yeah thats my plan as well, but I had issues with either the cable or adapter I was using, I'm hoping it wasn't the sandisk drive.
