evil_ most of them you don't have to join..

have a look on the cams website for the calendar, or do searches online for the clubs websites- they usually list the events that are coming up. Give the dude running the event a call. usually they are more than happy to have some extras show up to fill out the numbers.

GAZ shows up at most NSW motorkhana events- especially hills district events. I'm planning on dragging the gemini out as much as possible next year - providing it's in sydney and not semi-permanently in the workshop in canberra being fixed or upgraded.

Alex- a G200 would be an OK thing - I guess you could spec it up to Demtomaso over time.. It'd still be cheaper to buy a detomaso that's already built.

wander over to www.bmsc.com.au for lots of useful info on rallying, starting out, building cars etc..

Keep an eye on the CAMS website (http://www.cams.com.au/content.asp?PageID=Calendar)

Anything that says "multiclub" means any CAMS affiliated club member can enter.

Most clubs like to get outside people to their events - 'cause that way they actually make a buck out of it!

There is probably not much around this time of year but late Jan or early Feb should see things starting again.

The CL Rudd motorkhana is on at Ansell Pk (Richmond) on 3 Feb 2007 if you (or anybody else) are interested.

The Sigma of Death HAS to be ready for that :D
Even if you just want to come and watch, it is a good day out watching people trying to drive.

      cheers

basically going to mimick what the others have said. buy a cheap rwd that has already been built!

building them from scratch really adds up $$. theres always little things you overlook when budgeting that really blows the budget.

theres no such thing as a cheap 4wd rally car. unless you spend big bickies strengthing the drivetrain they go bang all the time.

my bro in law and me started rallying last year in a datto 120y. it was a slow bucket of shit yet unbelievably reliable. we were always getting 10-15th outright in VCRS's even with my shitty navvying (i may aswell have not been there).
ive since left and bro in law bought an ex neil bates detomaso charade, and although blindingly quick it has been nothing but trouble since he bought it. doesnt help that he keeps on smashing it tho.
in the vic series theres a couple of guys that got an elstocko R31 5 speed. stripped it, welded the seat frames, home built cage etc, mags and rally tyres and welt racing. it does really well too! dont underestimate the lil 31. parts are freakin everywhere for em too!

I am suprised no one has mentioned a Starlet GT yet....

There are plenty of people racing FWD's as well - have seen quite a few Chirade turbo's etc driving too and from event over here in Perth, they would be a cheap way of getting into Rallying. The FWD's will probably keep up with most RWD's at a cheap racing level, will also not be as oversteery at first so you can spend more time learning tracks / getting the right lines instead of correcting the car all the time.

That would be the sensible way to start, but we all like doing big drifto skids instead...

I did the exact opposite of what edo suggested... and it was a horrendously bad idea. I built a 4WD turbo instead of buying a 2WD shitter. It was a bad, bad, bad decision... one I rue to this day (more than 5 years later).

Evil, Get along to some of the khanas, and just chat to the people. It's a good idea to be an official at a few events to get the hang of how the events work (and score yourself some cred and free beers).

And the advice that every newbie wants to ignore, but is oh-so-true - Buy a car that's already built (and competing). Yes, it's an outlay in one lump sum, but it'll be so much cheaper than starting from scratch.

Oh, and from what I've seen, Excel's are teh new hotness. WA doesn't have the Excel series, though, so that doesn't help Alex.

I had a bit of a look at the excel series stuff over there, looks like it'd be quite a good comp.

Like most people have said, buy one already done. But try and buy one that has a recent history, shitters that have been sitting a shed for 10 years or never been raced usually are more trouble than there worth

Hit the forums on bmsc for all your rally needs, just don't listen to Tortfeaser all you'll end up with a camira in the shed.
