I dont know... But isn't the HQ racing meant to be cheap and mostly about fun?

          No racing is cheap
Controlled classes like HQ and Saloon cars can be worse with all the one-upping and "cheating" ....... sorry..... rule interpretation going on

Pick a class that looks like fun, that the crowd actually watches (more exposure for sponsors) and that you can afford to run in regularly

          Then go have fun

NO, cheap HQ was 10 years ago. To be at the front you will need to spend money and $60k per season would be very easy.
IPRA is still cheap enough, supersports, FVee, under 2lt sports sedans, marque sports in something cheap...

One Gpn Mustang driver reputedly spent $60k on clutches and more on 3 gearboxes and 2 engines this year alone...if you can believe the gossip from his mechanic.

Formula Vee is the cheapest class. You can buy a shitter for sub ten grand and race it that day. Spend mid teens and you have a car that coould get you a top 5 finish.

Tyres/parts/crash repairs etc are all at the cheaper end of the spectrum and you can sell the thing after a couple of years and get a fair whack of you money back.

Any national series is really a $100k proposition. By the time youve paid entry fees, transport, accomodation & all the other bits that you need for you & a few helper mates (whose costs you cover but you dont actually pay them) for say 10 races a year it gets there pretty fast...you dont need to spend a lot on the car to get well over that.

Brutes are expensive because now that they are part of the V8 circus they get to pay mega entry fees (and other fees) due to the 'exposure' they get...they also have to replace most of the car each race due to the elite level of driving skill.

A good commodore cup car is now around $60k-70k to build, A saloon car in EA/VN much the same & in AU/VT about $15k more.
A HQ that can win will cost you over $30k to build.
A Group N car (V8 one) will be about $300k or more if you really want to win.

So, unless youve got truck loads of money a national series is just silly...I spent $12k in one GTP round...I did 30 min practice, 20min Qualifying & 3 12 lap races for that, good value huh?

Depending on where you are, go to a state round & check out what sort of one make racing is running (& isnt running on a national level). Qld has geminis & Cals MX5 series, Vic has E30 BMs & 944 Porsches...no idea on other states.
Or you can enter the usual IP etc classes...but a competitive state level car in that is realistically over $100k...how far over depends on which state youre in.

Think about running an open wheeler (not F Ford) perhaps something like Formula Libre...which is a mishmash of lots of classes that dont exist anymore. What about Aust formula 2? Thats a wings & slicks category that is so much faster than anything else you can do for the money...and the running costs will be less than IP.

There are 2 rather good AF2 cars for sale in NSW at the mo, there is an ex john bowe elfin 700, could run hysterics but to do that would prolly need a kent motor in it (golf atm) and then there is the CRD that won the state championships, ugly as sin but quick, both are less than 30k. No F libre in NSW. From what I gather, it appears that the af2/supersports will be running with the clubmans next year (PRBs are going to their own series, aasa? So whateer is left or whoever still weants to run in a cams event will prolly be here)

Yeah they ruined HQ racing by being too flexible in the rulebook.

My mate used to build engines for them, and he got more power from a 'stock' 202 with a single throat carb than the XU1's got from triple webers. Madness.

In his shed was about 400 crankshafts that he had measured and straightened and balanced to find the lightest and truest crank..

Still reckon supersports FTW. Mulsanne/Radical?minetti are quick, cheap, easy on fuel and tyres and easy to transport and maintain. Almost as quick as supercars too...a season for $15k?
