What's the go with the law on underage sex here (not talking pervy internet grooming/pics etc etc)?

Someone told me it was legal for 2 ppl to have sex as long as they are both under 16, but if he is over 16 its illegal? Surely thats bullshit? If that was right a 15yo lad could be nailing the fuck outta a 13yo girl legally, but as soon as he hits 16 he has to keep it in his pants for 2 years?
And also something about if the girl is 16-18 the guy can only be a certain age too? :w:

This may not be 100% correct, but I reckon it is very close. In most if not all Australian states, the age of consent for heterosexual sex is 16 if both parties are less than 18 (might be 17). If one party is over that age (ie 17 or 18, whichever is the case) then the other party must be 17 or older. Ie, the free-for all age of consent is really 17. So for dirty old men, 16 is not legal.

So for both parties under the age of 16, there is no such thing as consensual sex (legally) and if there was to be charges laid, in the US they have what is called statutory rape (sex with a minor) which can be applied in either direction (ie the male can have instigated the sex or the female can have done it so either of them could be "guilty" of the offence). That would be pretty much true here in Aus too, but I'm not sure of what the names of the offences are and whether there are many occasions where they have been brought to bear. There are certainly enough underage pregnancies where the father is also underage that don't seem to have anyone get in trouble with the law.

I'm all for kiddy fiddlers getting burnt at the stake (etc) but I hate to burst everyone's bubble, not many of them actually ever get their comeuppance. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of civil libertarians (who seem to ignore what one would assume would be a noble and upright cause, and go off on tangents helping pedophiles get out and potentially re-offend, by opposing their identification). most of them, unless they are a high violence or drug risk end up at one or two (and I dare say it's the same elsewhere) prison farms, or protective custody. They are rarely (statistically speaking) on the receiving end of major violence inside. More is the pity.

Pack of cunts, people like that should be (at the very least) jailed indefinitely, 1 in 1,000,000 chance of reoffending is still 10,000,000,000,000 times too risky to allow them to be released. Death penalty would be better. (all I'll say here is that _anyone_ who has some close personal experience of shit like this, be it a family member, close friend, whatever, seem unanimous in their belief that capital punishment is warranted)..

It really worries me as to what's going on in politics when one considers the often ludicrously lenient sentences for paedophiles. Hell, it's not just the lack of judiciary discretion (or excess leniency on their part), the entire range of applicable penalties are way off the mark. Wonder why it is that seemingly politicians don't want to address it. Fucked if I can work it out. I doubt more than 1% (*i.e. the actual potential offenders) of the population would voice _any_ objection to such legislation.

My last point is that there are FAR worse things done to young children than this, really bad things that kids will not recover from. You simply will not hear of it in the news papers and if it did get some coverage it would not be commented on much because it does not involve sex

I used to work with young adults who had suffered during their childhood and in the end had to leave the industry - just too many horror stories.
