Acceptable spelling and abbreviations on this Forum.
the other ones that shit me are the Americanisms creeping in.
Litre/liter is one, metre/meter, extractors/headers, gearbox/transmission, tyres/tires, colour/color, problems/issues, maths/math are others. My pet hate is arse/ass.
Every time you choose to use an Americanism, our own Aussie English dies a little - You're a sell-out.
I'm an Aussie and very proud of it, I speak Aussie English and will not let my standards slip to that of a sub-dialect.
You're right on the money there Bill. If I wanted to live in America I'd move there, but it's really changed here since Mr Sheen got his nose all brown with Bush's nether regions. (And if you were going to follow the Yanks, could you pick a worse govt to gang up with?).
I guess it's partly due to Seppo culture being such a large part of the net, but it's like some people see them as being better than us somehow and want to be like them.
Footpath/sidewalk, lamppost/light pole, bonnet/hood, boot/trunk, "what's with...", "on crack" ... it's like we've been invaded!
I reckon being free just scares some people shitless
No.
Our modern English has a lot of French influence, hence the French spelling of those words - litre and metre.
The US spelling is influenced by Sesame Street.
I use litre as a protest against the Americans, an entirely legitimate cause :p
hood

Agree with the above.
'Gas' means LPG.
Short block means the bottom end of the engine, e.g. "I have a short block 3SGE for sale" means that engine block & internals of the engine are for sale.
Long block means the whole engine, sans manifolds.
(found this out recently, I mistakenly though otherwise for years)

I was making a point
I know the translation is
short block = short motor
long block = long motor
and how could I forget
mini truck
"pickup truck" was bad enough, but at least it didn't take here. "Mini truck" seems to have taken hold by the air bag dick heads.

Seconded, other than gearbox/transmission. I feel both are suitable and one isn't necessarily less Australian than the other.
The interesting one is gaol/jail. Many so called "Aussies" just love to use jail. Wankers!
TIP: Everyone start using Firefox 2.0 it has a built-in spell checker, now it just needs a grammar checker to be perfect.
PS: I triple read this post to make sure I didn't miss any words (I have habit of doing that).
