willys, did you end up getting your wheels done then?

I'm wondering how good it is in something that deflects like a wheel, ie does it crack? Am thinking of getting mine done also, but would love to hear from someone who's already had success

AFAIK, all alloys with any sort of colour on them are powdercoated (eg. anything apart from the ones which are polished). If you et 'em done again, just be sure to get a clear-coat of paint applied afterwards, as powdercoat apparently likes to absorb brake dust.
Now, I didn't know about the clearcoat thing so didn't pay for it to be done, but it cost me $55/rim around 10 years ago to get a set of 5 poorly-resprayed 15" alloys sandblasted & powdercoated. It was about 2.5yrs after that tat I sold the car; the alloys weren't looking discoloured yet from the brake dust (that I remember). No cracking, and a fair bit of use on Sydney's craphouse roads.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Thanks Forg, good info to have. Especially the clearcoat.

                Cheers

That was our experience on the racecars, you'd do the supposedly quick'n'nasty job and just give 'em a coat of white 2-pack and they'd glow white for ages (albeit chipping/scratching easier).

                  OR

You'd get them powdercoated and they'd chip/scratch less but the brake dust just seemed to absorb into the powdercoating. Keep in mind here we're talking racecars running round with brake temperatures rapidly approaching 800*c (at indy in the old 2 door STi GT-P car (eg. small brakes) we burnt off the highest temperature brake paint that the man from competition friction had on him, ambient of probably 40*C, track temperature of perhaps 70*c (concrete canyon).
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

I've had the wheels done on the ute now for 9mths or so not a mark on them.
Easy to cleen and hard to mark.

BUT I found out that Holden put alittle rubber type shit in the stock paint that you need to get stripped off before getting them done.It will still work without getting it done but wont last as long.

Assuming this is a kit, did they specify this finish?

Might be worthwhile checking some advisory circulars from FAA/CASA in relation to fatigue properties of anodised components.

Of course there will be inspections before final testing of the airframe when it's finished. If there's any dramas i'm sure they'll tell us.

As for the kit builders, the guy who designed it was killed in a plane crash.....won't find much out from him anymore

I got my plenum back and its polished atm, it turns out I give no fark for keeping it shiny and scratch free.

Im thinking of powdercoating it silver. Is it possible to powdercoat this type of metal? Any ideas what this would cost roughly?

I dont like shiny ally so a sand it smooth and rub it with steel wool gives a lovely satin finish that is easy to touch up at any time.

                              Powdercoat FTW!

Had my BBS done, over 1yr theyre still easy to clean and in brand new condition! Doesn't appear to have absorbed any brake dust.

I've had lots of stuff powder coated here. (Tens of thousands of dollars worth)

                                that is all

does he do polishing as well? place I went to get my wheels powdercoated and polished is hopeless. He rocks up whenever he feels like it and the coating part was a bit iffy in some places
