Paul, I'm guessing that would be what I call, "the wall factor". Some people (usually those who have not paid for the car and have no idea how much it has actually cost, or simply "don't care"), have no fear of it. That is always good for 2 seconds, if not more. Mind you, it still takes a lot of skill to be able to use it, but when you've come out of the kink at Wakefield at >200kph backwards, and done a 540 degree turn onto the back straight without the wheels on the ground, you start to re-evaluate exactly how much those next few tenths of a second are really worth or might cost. I'm not surprised that it took you a year to beat the bastard
Tip for those who don't understand this. Never let anyone who has a killer instinct drive your car on a race-track, unless they give you a certified bank cheque for what it has _really_ cost you to build... Once you do this, you will be surprised at how few people will ask you if they can have a drive of your car.
So true, I've never raced on a circuit but back when I was young & stupid me & a couple of mates used to do regular hills runs (Adelaide hills FTW), one of the guys had an RX3 13B turbo with big turbo, microtech, whiteline suspension, big arse brakes & yoki 509's, cost him a packet & it was his only car, my dato 1600 POS with na l20b, stock cut springs, monroe shocks, skyline front brakes & shitty road tyres used to hand him his arse every time, it cost me sfa, I had other cars if I broke it & I had not yet developed a self preservation instinct. He wanted to know how I beat him so I took him for a run, he never got in a car with me again.
Haha, you're conceding that he might win now?
Come on Marty, what happened to your machismo?
Alex.
I have no doubt that FatBoy has the capacity to spend MUCH more then I can spend on winning
(because he would have to as well, not like a stocker SS is going to chop anything )
On a slightly more serious note, without semi slicks I doubt a 100% stock VY SS is going to get into the 1:15's - the only ones ive seen down there are well into the 1:20's .
hey can anyone recommend a place in sydney to get suspension upgrades for the taxi?
I have Bilstein shocks and eibach springs setup with a decent alignment from Heasmans. This is a very nice package and may be suitable for what you are after as a mate has the same package and is running 1:11s around wakefield in the same car as mine. It is still comfortable in a daily driver package. However I am moving to Tein Coilovers from wholesale suspension as discussed here:
One thing I am told makes a huge difference in these cars are sway bars but the front one is a nightmare to fit so most people dont try. The Harrop diff cover and revised bushes seem to be popular options if track racing these cars aswell.
Gavin, if you don't squeeze out a 1.15 i'll be suprised. One of my mates drives like a softcock and he does consistent low 17's in a totally stock* VX SS...
And Marty - just buy a go-kart mate, that way you've got a chance of beating my fat arse around a track of some description... :p
* Actually, now that i think about it the car has a decent exhaust and EBC pads / DBA slotted front rotors...
