It depends if you really want a calibration, or just a quick and dirty accuracy check. The former, from a certified and recognised laboratory, is worth a few hundred bucks. You can do the second one yourself in your garage with a few known weights, a tape measure and a calculator for zip.

I've got one of the sidchrome/norbar/whatever the fuck it is, and it's gone 10 years plus. I've also got the long needle and spring steel one, if y'all know that type. I actually like it far better for lower torque settings, like mini head bolts, and a couple of other shitty little things. It's also because a few of the things I've played with were left hand thread and needed the right torque to get decent life, and no chance of undoing with (a little either way and you get one of the two)

very very very generally speaking, get a really decent one. It's an investment. I've gotten a few jobs (when I say jobs, I don't mean I made money, I mean to say I got the 'priveledge' of fixing a close friend's fuckup) over the years that were almost certainly a result of improper torque, or the numbnuts inability to use a torque wrench.

I also loaned one to a relative (years ago, and under pressure from the old man as the relative had been mentally unwell, and needed a hand, and someone to trust in them) to do up flywheel bolts 'just right' on a car he was swapping clutch/flywheel on. Got it back, and it didn't work right. Turns out the fucking idiot used it to not only undo the bolts, but because he couldn't get them loose, and his breaker bar was shorter, he used the torque wrench and hit it with a sledgehammer. And I was the arsehole for not wanting much to do with him after that
