The $15k saving will buy you about 13000L of fuel, which will get you nearly 90,000kms.
A Diesel Disco uses about 10L average, so by the time you clock up 90,000kms, you would have spent $10k of fuel, so you would need to do 180k kms before your actually saving money over the Terry.
i'll also subscribe to your theories.

of course this only applies when the diesel vehicle of choice is greatly more expensive than a petrol one.

when your buying a 4WD, particularly when wanting to be towing, and the price difference between diesel & petrol is minimal, then its diesel all the way.

        Tempting.
I may consider a diesel Pathy (50k) + some sort of track toy (40k).

Recent research plus responses received here dictate this is more logical than a Disco3.

My wife is kinda anti-Ford. I didn't have the heart to tell her who owns Landrover.

Pathfinder diesels are not a bad thing. Don't move if you catch them below 1800rpm but once above that have got lotsa torque and pulling power. I'd personally avoid the manual though doesn't feel right and hopefully (I haven't driven an auto one) if they run a biggish stall convertor you won't be able to catch it below 1800rpm so torque hole problem.

Or you may be able to get the outgoing model on a run-out deal, with 151kw/450nm 4.2L straight 6. They are a brilliant tow car, with various chipa available for the diesel EFI, for more berries

This may limit you somewhat, I think it'll probably remove the car-like gerlytrux from the list.
In fact, it's lucky the laws have changed that say the tow-car has to weigh more than the thing being towed, or you'd be stuck with the 2800kg Discovery as the only option!
In all seriousness though, if you're towing more than twice a year (and if you're not then WTF are you doing buying one of these lardarse shitboxes), then you might want to see what the potential-purchase is like when pulling all that weight around. Some gerlytrux are much less disgusting when towing heavy stuff than others.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

                          Turbo ford teri and LPG!

Has anyone actually successfully converted an XR6t / Turbo Territory to LPG as yet?

                            And if so results?

If you're regulary towing 2.5 ton you definatley want something with a full chassis. Patrol, Disco or Landcruiser I think are the only ones? Either that or an F250.
