This car detail was probably worth more then the car..
Most of that is a total wank, esp all that computer software. I work for a company that has just started doing all the detailng work on all of virgin blues 737's.
Virgin uses our products to reduce fuel consumption and lengthen the time between resprays, ie its a fairly technical business, but even we dont use the type of equipment he was using because it is useless.
Great to know the thickness of the paint, yes, but u dont have that type of miroscopic control with a buff and compound, rendering the process a waste of time. We take gloss readings that is all.
Conclusion: Has computer software to justify why he can charge so much when it only lasts 6 months max (in Northern hemisphere), which would more likley be 3 months in our climate.
Taking a micron off is easy, paint is pretty hard. I can take a micron off in a lathe without too much difficulty and they are using soft foam pads and really fine compound.
Its more how do you know you are taking exactly a micron off on the spots that you need to, and arent just taking a micron off on the spots that you concentrate your pads on? Its all well and good to have fancy sensors etc that tell you the respective heights/depths of paint on the panels, but who is to say what the thickness of the metal is in that point, etc.
He lives in England so the petrol is freaking expensive the poor bugger can't afford to drive anywhere,
Even if he could the road traffic and congestion is so fierce it wouldn't be either far or fast.
Not to mention the weather...it most likely pisses down eleven and a half months of the year.
He can't even stay at home and watch the cricket without getting totally depressed.
Give the poor bastard a break. He needs something brighten up his pitiful existence and lets face the prospect of owning a V8 anything is "nowt but a dream".
