Technically yes, unless you can prove you pushed it or had it loaded by a tow truck with proper plates...

The funny/stupid thing is, a NSW Tow Truck aint supposed to tow anything across the line... I heard one argument that a queensland co was told they had to get NSW TT plates as they regulary came from QLD to NSW...

    Didn't hear the outcome...

So if I pick up junk cars and take them to Sims for money I need TT plates and a tow truck ticket?

JOEBLOG rego you can tow if:

        1. You are the registered or reciepted owner.
        2. You drive a car carrier that is able to transport (not tow) 3 or more vehicles running with out the use of a towing device ie. winch.
        3. You can prove you are not a business and/or not profitting from the vehilces you are towing. (ie. Like a free tow if you come to my shop for repair)...

123TT is legal to tow all vehilces except involved in a motor vehicle accident.
1234TT is legal to tow all vehicles.

123TT you are not required to hold on-hook insurance, full comp insurance, public liability insurance or in care insurance.

        1234TT you are... (by law)
Why is it that you don't need insurance if its an undamaged vehicle your towing but if you tow damaged vehicle you need the lot?

I'll assume that "on-hook" insurance is for any damage to a car thats on your tray/rig'd up?

yeah, there's something wrong with the tow truck man's version of the rules... How much of a car does it have to be before it becomes towing? A chassis with wheels? A complete car without wheels???

The reality is that if you tow for money or business you need a licence. ANYTHING else is fine.

On a side note what ever happened to those ezitow franchises? You know they had a dolly that was hooked behind a cruiser/patrol.

              1) buy junker car
              2) it is your car, so you can tow it with your truck
              3) the transport of the wreck is not for fare or reward, so TT plates not required
              4) ?????
              5) profit (at sims metal)

It's a grey area as usually you either pay for them or get them given to you, so they are yours... But yes, technically you/they should have all that... They had a blitz it the Rookwood-Canterbury area around scrap yards and auctions and made a supposedly 50 something incidents and 4 arrests...

Yep... You also dont need a TTA drivers certificate, which to get one you must not have had any crimal conviction in the past 5 years and also pass a discressionary(*sp*) test as well...

But in this bull shit political world, the Goverment/TTA are only concerned about Insurance companies that rule the Australian Goverment... So when we have to store a insurance companies vehicle after an accident, its covered... Its supposed to give us the upper hand in the fact we can show the public (that dont know) that unlike others, we fully cover the transport from the moment the keys are handed to us & from us at the other end...

The difference in 1234TT at the end of it all annually is about 15k, so it's not like a big waste of money...

But you get paid from Sims Metal after towing it to them... Or, you profitted by towing it to them, not paying a licenced operator to do it for you...

Bigmuz has a point, is there a point were it stops being a car and becomes scrap metal ?

Im guessing there is more to it then meets the eye, since it would be easy to get rid off stolen cars, damage them to the point they become scrap metal

It's the configuration of the towing vehicle that defines whether it's a "tow truck" and not necessarily what you're carrying.

yes, but you are not being paid for the tow, you are only taking your own property to them to sell
Sims could not contract you to pick them up, that would be getting paid to tow cars, but if you own the car, then sell to sims, different matter, no matter how short the ownership is
