I am pretty sure the current champ Warren McIlveen is far from being in his 20sOriginally posted by gxxr View PostDespite perceived cache and I'll grant you a nice exhaust note and an attractive body in some cases, end of the day, you are racing a converted road car at great expense, with all the compromises that entails. I'd refer you to Billzilla's earlier entry in this.
The SuperKart is a great idea, problem is most of us don't maintain the body of a 20yr old indefinately on the road to decrepitude. With all the general aches and pains of advancing years, the addition of a bruised rib cage after a weekend is something the more mature :D among us try to avoid.
But you also need some pretty big balls to race them.... I am sure I would shit myself at Turn 1 at EC in one....
Having spent the day watching the GTs at PI, whilst they are not as pure a racecar as a purpose built West, you cannot help but admire them and be in awe when something like the Aston Martin V12 comes blasting past..... :DNathan

Open Wheelers
I am the Sec of the Qld Clubman and Sportsman club, both these groups of cars run under the 2C group Cams rules, there is four sub groups under
Clubman [1300cc] Supersports 1100cc, 1300cc, and 1600cc.The 1600cc class is around 2,3 seconds faster than the West. There is large number of
Clubmans in Qld ,NSW and Vic, Some are for sale starting around, 15k.
Cost wise the 1100cc Super sports is most attractive as any 1100cc motor
cycle engine is suitable, ie engine and gearbox in one unit, some run a solid rear axle mit chain. I have a Clubman 1300cc fitted with a Suzuki STI
engine, it is a controlled unit, as per the rules,[ 10:1,255cam 8000limit]
but we are getting around 160 hp, the other unit is a UK designed Mallock
31, engine is still on choice, 4AGE , SR16[ yes 16, sameblock and head as
20 but short stroke 67mm] Gear box diff is a Mark 9 Hewland.
The club has a Rules co-ordinator and Cars Available Officer, who is
very helpfull, been in the sport 35 years, Ron Pommerel 0413829611 b/h
There are turn key cars available, new and s/h, Ron can help

Yep, very good point. There are early radicals in Britain for around 8K UKPOriginally posted by xtreme View PostMaybe not block but not allow it to race in 'their' series ala Carrera CupI don't care a damn for your loyalty when you think I am right; when I really want it most is when you think I am wrong.

Yes, agreed and you'd wonder what would happen with the removal of TV coverage, however, if those numbers are right, they've the equivalent of the NSW grid of supers. I understand the local Radical guy has sold quite a few here for the trackday crowd too. Afaik, the local manufacturers are struggling for sales, yet these 100k+ machines are selling quite well....not sure this is indicative that there is something about the local formula people don't like???Originally posted by NeroThe thing about the west cars, well made though they are, is that they are not eligible for anything apart from the somewhat contrived AMRS sportscars and their own series. They do not meet the FIA def of a sportscar due to the central driving position and the supersports will never want to hear from them. In effect they are a single seater with bodywork.
Some good quality pov - with weird yank rolling start.Originally posted by Rzill throw some pics in here because i think these cars are super cool

Totally OT, might not get a response for your Q about the cv/bearings/hubs because of the way that other forum is configured now.
Think the Golf cv is used because of availability and price, xbgs351 should be able to give you info on durability as they are almost universal in F2. One drawback they are heavy, I'd estimate 3~4kg each. There are two types of hub available to the best of my knowledge, the early and Mk III Golf, one accomodates a 64x34x37 double row bearing the other 72(?)x40x37. If you want to go centrelock, you'll have to make a hub adaptor.
The other option is to go for GKN cvs or, if you are flush, tripods. Made in Germany distributed by Hardy Spicer locally. If you buy driveshafts, by all accounts the GKN ones had some issues with 600cc FSAE machines, this guy up your way might be worthwhile contacting, if you used those cvs, length wasn't a problem he said at the time.

The Minetti is basically a radical clone with some minor changes. The class presents good racing at an affordable price for the speeds involved. The West is a much much more commercial venture as it is in the states, where the vast majority of motorsport is run by promoters as a commercial proposition...much like AASA AMRS etc
There is nothing wrong with this commercial venture, it is just part of what people have to consider when you go into it. It is part of ther 'rsik/cost' element. It might have a defined life based on its commercial success.I don't care a damn for your loyalty when you think I am right; when I really want it most is when you think I am wrong.

Just to clear that up, superkarts are a lot easier on the body than sprint karts. The seats are full length so your ribs don't cop all the pressure. Lots of superkarters are quite old dudes and as long as you have rack and pinion steering, it's not that hard on the body.Originally posted by gxxr View PostThe SuperKart is a great idea, problem is most of us don't maintain the body of a 20yr old indefinately on the road to decrepitude. Looks like Formula-Robertson is a growing category.
Originally posted by http://www.formula-robertson.comAfter receiving expressions of interest from various people
I am proud to list a breakdown of confirmed and maybe for 2008.
CONFIRMED
Terry Robertson
Dallara 398
Reynard 913
Dallara 395
Cheetah Mk7
Sirch 297
Barry Elbourn
Dallara 301
Dallara 300
Dallara 398
Glenn Lynch- Dallara 398
David Choon - Dallara 396
Jon Mills - Cheetah Mk8
Troy Camplin - Ralt RT30
Craig Dawson - Dallara 391
POSSIBLE
Greg Hunter - Reynard 913
AF2 competitors may also run which would
introduce upto 4 chassis ( at least in NSW rounds)
Rohan Christmas - Cheetah Mk7 ( Winton rounds)
There is every possibility that we will outgrid Formula 3 next year.
With that there is the possibility that more of their competitiors/chassis
will drift across, especially privateer's. As a result I have confirmed that
they have begun offering privateer's "free entry".Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the end of the world?

Formula Robertson = old cars that are not competitive anywhere else :D
Great they are preserving the old cars, but to compare it to the 2008 F3 grid which will have something like 6 current model cars from the British and Euro Championships, plus international drivers, plus the CAMS Gold Star, plus being a recognised international formula..... Formula Robertson hasn't a prayer.
Tim Macrow (current F3 Champ) recently went and tested Formula Atlantic in the US..... spanked the other guys by 1sec the first day, didn't do the second day, and they still couldn't touch his time. I hope he finds the funding and sponsors to go kick some serious arse.Nathan
