so, the new Audi S3 is out in oz

... and cheaper than I expected at $65.5k but still well kitted with 188kw, 6spd, quattro, 18's, silk nappa leather, xenons, bose stereo, front, front-side and rear-side airbags.

$1300 for metallic paint is a little silly.

so, along with the golf r32 sounds to be a reasonably priced alternative to sti's and evo's.

I'd still have an R32 though.

Yeah - hard to forget. But just doesn't seem to have the urge it should. This 2.0TFSI puts out the same power and Audi clames 0-100 in 5.8

DMS reflash of R32 netts 200kw and 360Nm. Price is $2000
Upgrade headers and intake and get 210kW and 381Nm. Price $3000

And its still cheaper than a S3.

If you're after an occassional track day car, I would not look at a VW or Audi. Using the Dutton Rally as a guide, VW/Audis are no where near the pace of the Evos/Stis. As a luxury daily with a bit of poke, they'd be nice.

Exactly. The S3/R32 are more competitors to the BMW 130i, Merc C320 Coupe etc.

BMW 130i took out 6th, 7th, and 8th at the Bathurst 12 hour this year.

how many people are really going to be cross-shopping STI/EVO with S3/130/R32 though?

Ok I'll bite. They are totally different things. The WRX and EVO are both fairly cheaply finished and you pay for performance. The euros are the opposite. You can get them to perform as well, but it will cost a small fortune. In real terms few people use either to their full potential anyway. I'd sooner have a comfortable daily driver and sacrifice performance for luxury/finish. If I had to have only one car, I'd probably buy an EVO.
