    Parts Washers

I'm looking at grabbing a parts washer... I'm a little undecided as to what I'd really need (not want).

I stuff around with manifolds a bit so would want something big enough to wash jz manifolds, but to be hoenst I don't think I'd use it 'that' much to justify spending much money...

There appears to be three sizes, a 3.5 Gallon, 20 Gallon and 40 Gallon...

The 5 looks too small the 20 looks okay, but a little fragile ($182) and the 40 gallon could be a little too big ($270).

Any thoughts on whether it's worth spending the extra on the 40 over the 20?

The 40 looks stronger and might be large enough to stuff a gearbox into. I believe it also has a filter.

I have the 20 Gallon one, but havn't filled it yet. Kero to fill it is abor $120, I don't know of any water based degreasers that actually work without eating your skin.

I've used the 20 Gallon ones at the workshop and they seem fine for most tasks.

I reckon better too big than too small.

On an unrelated note we had a huge 3 phase (I think) one at my old work and drained it one day. Had all sorts of sludgy black crap coming out of it. We left the hose running from the washer, under a door, and into the drain (not stormwater) over night after we drained it. Come in the next day and a 4 inch piece had been cut out of the hose. Mmm, that would have been a tasty cone!

I have heard of people using diesel instead of kero in parts washers. No idea on the results though.

Thanks Guys... I'm still a bit undecided. I was gonig to use some Avanti chemicals product in the washer, depending on pricing.

            ewww Diesel would be nasty.

BMWTurbo what do Avanti have on offer?

I don't mind washing parts in kero with my bare hands, water based degreasers tend to be annoying because you have to put gloves on and some arn't compatible with aluminium as well as some of them just not working very well at all.

Kero leaves an oil film on parts obviously which is easy to rinse off off with a water based degreaser if you need to.

I've used hydrablast with work for cleaning the insides of piping which had been sand blasted for oxygen rich use.

It left no residue and appeared to work well. I'm not certain which product I'd use but from memory 20L are less then $100.

60l drum filled with petrol, little electric pump flowing into an industrial sink.

most expenisve part would be the petrol

I'd rather buy one that's fit for the purpose to be honest ....

I got a demo at training years ago that proved Avtur (kero same shit) takes 40 seconds after hand contact until it can be detected on your breath. In bloodstream- lungs- breath = fucked up kidneys/liver over time. Don't want to sound like Sgt. Safety but if you deal with shit everyday it'll catch up with you.

There are a lot more nasties in Avtur such as antifreeze and anitfungal chemicals though.

Wouldn't get your hopes up too high. Looks identical to another Chinese sourced parts washer I've been using of late - takes 3 20L drums of solvent to fill....so 20gal?

You'd be hard pressed to fit a gearbox unless the lid is removed and you stood it upright. Pump output is laughable, I piss harder, the filter medium consists of a wad of fibre stuffed into the box the pump sits in and has no discernable effect - may stop gearsets!

Other odd thing, warning on the lid not to use flammable liquids, some Castrol product is mentioned, so the aforemention 20L drums supplied with the funny flame stickers are just a bit puzzling.

They all have a "Do nut use flammble liquids" sticker and yet they all seem to have a fuseable link on the mechanism that holds the lid up.

Fuseable link = bit that melts and shuts the lid if there is a fire.
