BTW stupid idea - 3cyls are the most naturally unbalanced engines ever - I would hate to see how much time and effort went into balancing that POS.

There are much better engines out there.
    Busa derived V8 for example.
A flat plane hayabusa derived V8 is a better engine but you're banging on about balance?
Frankly without doing the maths, and I'm not gonna do the maths, you can't just instantly say that this will be imbalanced in all modes just because a single bank 3 cylinder is. You don't even know what the firing order is so can't even calculate primary and secondary vibrations anyway.
While I agree that the design is cumbersome, the advantage it would have over a V6 or V8 is additional bore diameter, thus valve area, for a given engien capacity.
And as an engineer you should understand that things are not always built just because they are better, but because they are to fit a specific design specification.
    Regardless, 500+hp from a n/a 3 litre is impressive

Okay okay. Hex-cam, then (no overhead).

expensive thesis...but if it works it will get attention...which is prob why it ws done.

From memory vibration problems are usually in this order
            s3 / v6 / w12 /this thing (not that well balanced)
            s4 / v8 / w16
            s6 / v12 /all boxer engines(all naturally balanced)

not sure where the 2 and 5cyls fit or the v10 (same place as the 5 though)

All that stuff depends on the bank angle, firing order, etc too. It's not nearly as black and white as a list like that.

Zac is correct, there are so many variables that we cannot generalise from snippets of information....e.g. the naturally balanced engines you list would not be so with a different firing order etc...

My subie engine doesn't look very fucking well balanced.. the thing shakes all over the joint at low RPM.

Actually you'll find that boxer engines often have problems with 2nd order harmonic vibrations especially the 4's. I was discussing this with an engineering mate last night.

It's dependent upon a lot of things how smooth engines are
