I understand where you guys are coming from, my car may be a 200B, but I guess its saving grace is that it ain't your run of the mill style, and being a SSS coupe it isn't that common. Every man and his dog has a 1600...and to a similar extent, 1200.

Which begs the question, what do you recon something like this 120Y would be worth, given that it's been engineered as a circuit/sprint car?

Pete - looks cheap for what is listed as being on it. I would wonder if the 52'000kms are mainly track km's or as that may not be terribly good. Notice he lists no RWC - maybe would not pass a "regular" one but that is not a huge drama really. Makes mention it is not a show car either which may be a nice way of saying "it has heaps of good gear but the car is fucked and falling apart" - again depends how bad it MAY be or what you value all the parts you could pull off it at? Definitely cheap and good from the ad and pics though - I would want more pics and a look for sure!

As with pretty much every second hand race car it could be the bargain of a lifetime or it could be a money pit. Many many people put their competitive well glued together race car up for sale...but it often isnt the same as when it finished its last race. You can still get good money for decent 2nd hand bits, so those bits are stripped out & worn out fucked bits are put in. Even better when say you have someone selling a WRX or EVO rally or GTP car...they have just bought the new model, all the really expensive trick bits that fit the new car...accidentally get pulled out of the one for sale.

If youre buying a race car, see it run & hand over the folding a the racetrack & tow it home, its the only way to be sure youre getting what you think you are.

 Have you seen this done?

I must be very sheltered, I would never think to do this to someone, so I wouldn't expect it done to me either!

Hell yes, Ive seen cars that are all of a sudden 8 sec slower than they were with previous owners...sure the driver is different, but its not like one was Lewis Hamilton & the other a Melbourne cabbie. Of course the previous owner claims himself as a legend, but having seen these two race for many years Id doubt there would be half a second in the samer car.

I pulled some good bits off my torana before selling it, I didnt with the honda or the 200 though...it almost gets down to being more hassle than its worth if you cant transfer the bits into the next car.

Race cars are not, this happens in just about every sale involving a motor vehicle.

I Wouldn't think it worth the effort! Except if you were building a completely new race Car exactly the same as old one...but then you would sell it as second/spare car and be clear to purchaser that it was all your second hand bits, and just a 'roller' essentially, and the car would require complete check over.

Ok say youve been running an evo 6 in whatever for the past 4 years, youve got a cracker of an engine that has all sorts of good gear in it that cost a fortune in time & money to get it right, its still really strong. Youve also got the tricky diffs in this car that are almost legal. Youve just bought a new evo9 to keep up to date in the series...it has a stock engine & diffs which are interchangable with those from the 6.
Do you: 1. go get a 2nd hand engine & diffs from the wreckers, bung that in the 6 & flog it; 2. transfer the 9 engine & diffs into the 6 & keep the flash stuff or; 3. do you sell the 6 as it ran & now go buy yourself new engine bits & diffs that will probably cost you around what you got for the entire 6?

Nearly everyone will do 1, some might do 2 & hardly anyone will do 3.

:O Everyone of my cars was sold as a race/rally prepared going concern...

i.e. My suzuki Swift was sold into ACT and the young guy ran a rally a week or two later...he went on to win his class and Junior c/ship in my old car!

the Gti-R was sold and the new owner entered the very next rally....he was not interested in and did not purchase the Bitumen Suspension set up though!

We also sold a Formula Ford that My Ex competed in, straight to a Race School.

*Edit* I can fully understand the thinking.....I guess that just shows how little regard my Ex had for the money spent!

"Curse of the previous owner" is something that impacts a lot of modified/race cars and it's hard to pick when you are buying!

Bargain! It could also do with some cool plates, maybe if you can pick these up for 65k, so for 80k you would have a real dream machine!
