gas conversion is probably a couple thousand, then the rebate.

but the cars in the link i posted above have the conversion already done, some still have warranty. there are sedans wagons and utes. the whole nine yards. i forgot to add 'tow bar' to the search field, but a lot of the cars still have them. a typical falcon on gas gets around 400klms to the tank. (about 60 litres)

Having towed car trailers 10,000s of kms with a pajero of the model your mate has, my advice is to get anything else instead. The shitbox rusting hulk of an XF panelvan running on 4.5 cylinders on gas was the better tow car than the pajero.
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

Gas conversion will still cost 1.5k at a minimum. (after the rebate)

Get one that has already been converted.

we used to have a hilux surf turbo diesel which we used to tow a gokart trailer

          it did it with ease.
maintaine was pretty good. usual oil change etc

can be bought for very cheap
          plenty of space
          all electrics too.

Pajeros don't like gas. If he's on a budget then a Falcon wagon on gas is perfect. Legal 2100kg tow capacity as well, not all 4wds/utes are legal at that. Not to mention cheaper to maintain and easier to live with.

              falcon

get a AU falcon on gas, theres a few E-Gas models or whatever they were called that came from the factory with LPG only, but avoid ex taxis

Good choice and these tow extremely well even on gas which I have done a number of times with my mates GAS only coon. I second the earlier motion of buying any already converted one to save the hassle and cost.

This will tow the s13 no dramas.

Since you got the Pajero so cheap, if the running gear and such is still in alright nick I'd look at a gas conversion for that.... (if it's possible)... considering theres the nice government rebate it would make a mega cheap solution to your problem.

Otherwise, yeah, definitely falcon on gas then sell pajero...

We had one of those back in the mid 90s, 2.8L, fitted an AXT turbo kit..It's pretty reliable if kept in low boost form (ie 7psi) but I destroyed the 3rd gear after enriching the fuel and upping up the boost to 10psi.

But for a bog stock 2.8L, overall it's damn reliable.

To be honest if he's after dirt cheap motoring, I probably wouldn't recommend an old diesel. Reason being as the modern ultra low sulphur diesel will at best damage the injection pump seals if not destroy the pump completely. As myself and a few of the other PF diesel crew will attest - not a cheap fix. Other than that I've had no troubles with mine. That said I still reckon they're awesome and would buy another.

Falc on gas for the cheap (though maybe not as reliable) towing win

I think there's some bipolar shit going on with those. Some of them are incredibly & expensively unreliable, others are typically Toyota.
You might need to find the appropriate Toyota forum to see which of the engines are complete rubbish & which are fine.
They do all suck to drive compared to an AU on LPG.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
