Believe it or not the exhausts on those things ain't that bad, they fire at 360 degrees crank rotation to each other so they don't interfere much.
The exhaust's are actually good enough that you need quite a good inlet port job to justify much more than a basic port on the exhausts - coz the fuckers don't rev (small bore, long stroke) if they have too good an ex port they over-exhaust & loose midrange torque (well, if you can call it that).
The larger engines (1275-1340) are not so bad - closer to square, so they need a little more ex port work.
Intake bowls are horrid - bowl comes up to the seat at 90 degrees - no bottom cut whatsoever, so they flow shit at low lift, unfortunately the rocker ratio makes it impossible to get much lift into them - the only solution is to fit larger valves, which are then shrouded by the chamber edge - but it's still the lesser of the evils.
Getting them to flow on the intake side is a juggling act - valve size vs shrouding vs bottom cut length, can do your head in untill you figure it out.

Old mans 1380cc engine in his Bugeye used to see 9000rpm occasionally...
They are not as horrid as the uninformed comments in this thread make them out to be.
I wish is was mine... It's Simon Gardners car - his wife runs it in the MG series.Originally posted by tortfeaserIs that yours Lurch? What is the rear main story?
Rear main on the standard A-series are just an basic oil slinger - I belive Simon converted it to a proper oil seal with a new backing plate.
Mini or Sprite? If it's North/South, PM me...Originally posted by tortfeaserAnyone got any idea what a EN40B 1275cc crank is worth? I've got bills and parts, need to get rid of both.Classic Auto Fabrications:

i used to work at a place that serviced and restored minis, mokes and other A series shitters. Yes you can get them to go pretty well indeed, especially considering the age and capacity. With minis the weak point is the gearbox and drop-gears, not the motor itself per se. In the old morrisses and sprites it's not quite the same problem as they use a "normal" box.
an equivalent capacity jap twin cam will shit on a BMC A series for power, but I tell you what, no jap twin cam sounds as good as a worked A series!Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

One of the best sounding BMC engines I've heard was a Healey 3000 that competed in last year's Dutton NSW. Couple of big webbers and the long EC straight was music to my ears!
