    It's $5k cheaper; list-price of $35k vs $40k for a manual 5dr.
I personally think that's enough of a price-hike that for some people the GT is worth considering; I think I'd still be GTI'ing it instead (plus I'd prefer a 3dr anyway).

As for the original question; the GT falls in between the TDI and GTI in just about every way; fuel usage, price, equipment, etc. For that reason, I think it's a fair price, even if I do think that there're too many models of Golf.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

So what you're saying is... you only buy cars based on what your friends think of them? :p

to be honest badge credit does play a part, why the fuck else would people drive 316 and 116i?

we ended up going for the mini because we felt it was an original car not just a hotted up base spec (yes i know you can get a cooper) ... i also have this thing about resale and tend to think cars gravitate towards the lowest spec price as times goes on so there is a finacial side to it.

They want the better perfomance / better spec car? I could've got a 525i Sport, pulled off the badges and it would be virtually indistinguishable from a 540i Sport - except for the fact that it would be a slug, and be lower specced inside.

Not saying it isnt ... infact i never said the golf gti was overpriced ... i said it annoyed the missus that half her friends didnt know what it was and associated it with the 1.6 trend line.

I quite liked the GTI for the record.

First question ill be asking my brother is "why didn't you get a GTI?" Is does seem like an odd choice. If you want a povo pack and great fuel economy just get the $29990 on the road TDI, if you want performance get the GTI. But i never really pictured old mate as a performance car guy anyway, so i was actually supprised he got something called "GT" in the first place. I reckon his misses would have had something to do with it as well which may have prevented GTI goodness. This might have been a compromise.

$37K (on the road) is $1500 under the RRP(for a base spec no options model) . And doesn't take into consideration rego, stamp duty, dealer delivery, CTP etc

So in essence he got a $7000 discount or close to 20%.
