Tell your Brother that when he gets boared with one of the most underwhelming cars in its class he can trade it on an "Asbo" for about the same money. Not only that but the XR5 is a German car while his is a south african car so it will be a nice trade up.

Under what circumstances did he buy the car? Was it a straight-out purchase using cash/cheque/whatever (regardless of how the cash/cheque/whatever was financed/loaned), or are we talking a lease deal which mayn't include some of the up-front taxes/duties?

If he's managed to get $7k off the list-price of the car, he's done very very well; even if it's a 2006 he's done damned well to find one that wasn't pre-sold in 2005!
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

he paid cash, it's an '07 build, picked it up about 6 weeks ago. it was about 9 days from signing the papers to picking it up. 3dr GTI, black, no options.

Maybe your brother & I are the only two people who think a black 3dr GTI is the pick of the Golf bunch, and it's been sitting in the stealership longer than the 5drs &/or other colours have? Regardless, I reckon he's done well, and am insanely jealous.

advantage of a 3dr over the 5dr is that the 3dr is German built too (in theory it should really make any difference, but anecdotally that's not the case...)

quick replies are being truncated again.... it wasn't my brother, the OP was the one referring to their brother - it was my mate.

$37k for a 3dr GTI with no options is possible, everyone wants the fruit. I understand the Golf lineup is about to be fiddled to delete the Sportline which would then make the GT make more sense. As it stands I find the engine more interesting then the car, and as a car I can't see the point. The only Golf GT that I would look at is the upcoming TDI version. Otherwise I would go GTI.

i don't see $5500 in dealer delivery, rego and stamp duty unless we're talking WA stamp duty or some insane dealer delivery charge.

Golf dealers did have the end-of-financial year sale on last month with no dealer delivery, no stamp duty and no registration costs on all new golfs. Sounds like a good deal to get another $1.5k (and metallic paint) off that.

And yeah f**k that 1.4lt, twincharged thing. Just twice as many things will to wrong and not that much power to show for it. You'd be mad not to get a 2.0TDI if you really wanted a GT.

Except at the present moment there is no spec level in a diesel to match the GT TSI. Sportline TDI is more expensive than the GT and is lower specced (no ESP, 16inch wheels etc etc).

Except i think you will find it excluded GT, GTi and R32

Add me as a 3rd. Black 3dr Golf GTi is easily the pick for me. Still debating a new daily and this exact combo is right up there.

They had a golf GT on The Car Show on channel nine today.

They dynoed it and got 121kw at the wheels (best-avge was about 118). To see if it was 'a good one', they dynoed another one and got pretty much the same.

Looks like VW may be understating the actual HP.

                            Curious.

I think, though, that in the Motor test the GTI turned out to be quicker anyway.

Most of the VW turbo range puts out better than expected figures on the dyno.

Polo Gtis will put out figures better than the 124Kw Pug 206 180 and the 118Kw NC MX5 yet is only rated at 110kw.
