Does the franchise put out any marketing pamphlets which tell you what they check? If it says "check oils" then jackpot.

Well, we went to the gearbox place, and its not the box itself, its the transfer box thats fucked. Apparently, they could only drain about 100ml of oil out of it before it was dry, and there were no leaks anywhere on it.

As it turns out, he didn't specifically ask for a major service, he just said "check everything out, and fix whatever needs fixing." They charged him $380-odd for that, and only did what appears to be a minor service, didn't even check the coolant. So he hasn't really got a leg to stand on unfortunately, except for the rather high cost for a very basic service. Thanks anyway all.

both the mechinics i use, write down what they done to the vechiles they service.

might be worth getting another person in your location to call up and ask what they will get done to there vechile if they were to do the same.

I would have thought even a normal service involves a check of all fluid levels, and I would assume they would check the gearbox oil in that - $380 is a bloody expensive basic service too

I would be looking for a printed brochure showing what they are supposed to do for a service. That usually says "check all fluid levels". IMHO something someone tells you over the phone will not stand up in court.

mate thats bullshit, he said 'check everything'.. last time i checked a trafer case was a fairly major part of 'everything'..

besides that, ALL fluids should be atleast checked on ALL services, unless the service book specifically says not to. any dill knows that.

as the others have said on the receipt there should be a list of what was checked and replaced on the car. if he cant find it then go back to the place of service and get another copy of the receipt.

i find it a bit weird that it only had 100ml in the transfer and there was no leaks. id be asking the g'box company if the box was overfilled with oil, maybe the seal between the transfer and gearbox was fucked, and transfer fluid pumped into the box??

Look, I reckon the situation is fucked, and I have read the receipt, and I do think he got ripped off, but there is nothing there to say they went anywhere near the driveline, and the only oil they replaced was the engine oil. If it were mine I'd be pursuing it, but I suspect that I can't know the situation intimately enough to argue it successfully. I might go see them anyway, see if I can't at least call them a bunch of cocksucking greasemonkeys, and ask them whether they are happy earning 400 bucks a week, but that won't get much solved, apart from making me feel better.

It's possible that they fucked up, it's also possible that it had fuck all oil in it when he got it and it just made it. Due to it's tackiness, gear oil (though I concede this box might actually use engine oil or even atf) can seep out without major leaks on the driveway. you tend to find the entire floorpan instead is 'rust proofed' with a protective film, as it's flung there from a high rpm tailshaft yoke.

I'd still put money on it being human error - they at a minimum didn't check it, or worse drained and forgot to refill. If they did _that_ though it would have been lucky to have made it home. So I have to go with didn't check and top up.

Of course, they'll give you a bullshit answer - what have they got to lose - they bullshit and say 'not my fault' and you buy it, they are home and hosed. They hold out and you have to go to court - most people don't want to go through all the hassle, so again, shonky workshop will hold out and hope the other party doesn't take it further, much much further.
