Okay, let's hear it - what are some of the great drives you've been on, and what made them so great?
I did one today that wasn't half bad, but probably doesn't rate as one of the greatest drives ever. Kicked off in Canberra just before 7am when I dropped my wife off at work. Filled the car up in Queanbeyan then on to Braidwood for coffee and breakfast. Down the Clyde Mountain to Batemans Bay and down the coast to Narooma, where I stopped for half an hour or so to dip my feet in the ocean (just about the only thing that totally relaxes me).
That was followed by a further drive down the coast to where the Snowy Mountains Highway meets the Princes Highway, just north of Bega. Then on to the whole point of the trip - climbing Brown Mountain, which a few people had told me is a good road (and it is, but I would have liked some more climbing - seemed like it was over a bit too quickly, and I would really have liked some more opportunities to exercise the throttle in lower gears).
After the Brown Mountain section, a stop in Nimmitabel for lunch and then a relaxed cruise from there through to Cooma and then joining the ski traffic on the way back to Canberra. Back in my front door at 2:30pm or so, after roughly 520km, and averaging 11.0l/100km if anyone's interested in that level of detail.
(The drive I think I enjoyed more than any other before or since was when I'd only just moved to Canberra and decided one afternoon to go to Selwyn Snowfields. The road from Cooma to Selwyn - Snowy Mountains Highway - is one of this country's great driving roads if you like fast corners and long sweepers like I do, and one day I'll do the whole road from Cooma to Tumut in the summer).
