Still another What Car is This thread.

I just remembered I took some photos of an old beast when travelling overseas. Anyone know what this is?
And ten points for guessing where.

Going by the other cars in the background, I'm thinking the pic was taken somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Which makes me think that the car is one of the old Soviet limos like the Zil...but I have no idea.

Which begs the obvious question - how did you find yourself there? (and was it good?)

Part of the job - I was doing a 747 frieghter run from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai to Baku, a night or two there, then up to Luxenbourg for Cargolux.
It's an interesting place, a blend of old Russian-style and also Turkish.
Down on the waterfront was a ratty old hydrofoil, but they wouldn't let me take photos of it.
                  Njet!!!

It's the original oil town of the start of last century, they still have plenty there. Also if you look on Google Earth, up to the north on the coastline is one of those big ground-effect Ekranoplans.

The whole Soviet car industry is one huge mystery to me - just been doing some quick reading on Wikipedia and the history of it is pretty interesting. Surprising how much Western help the Soviets got with their cars.

I came across a later GAZ at the Haynes motor museum near Yeoval, england. I'd love one of these things for a cruiser!

Heh, even I'd give the thumbs-up for an LS1 fitting into one of those.
