Did anything come of Saab's work on variable compression ratio?
Or did it spontaneously catch alight for no apparent reason & leave the engineers working on it stranded?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I remember reading about this, sounded too complex to be reliable.

I think a bunch of people suggested to Saab engineers that they should prioritise improving reliability of their existing products

fwiw, the engine had merit imho.

And their response was "shove a Holden engine in it" ... no wonder their cars always suck.

atkinson cycle does what this engine tried to achieve in a much more simple way.

Pity no one has put more effort into one, but being limited to a twin does have drawbacks.

there was a post like last week about mercedes fielding a 1.4 litre petrol motor that does 175kW and 360Nm or something like that

              DI and variable compression

I think it had a head that tilted slightly on one side to raise/lower compression a bit or something along those lines.

they should've built it with a boost referenced inflatable head gasket, that would be even MORE simple

                      Not really.

80's turbo cars ran less boost and high 7 low 8 compression - there has been quite a bit of advancement in engine design

they run around 9-10psi do they not?

"same" engine in the quattro runs 13-14psi.
