2 litres an hour when you average 30 km/hr in the city is BIG news.Originally posted by Billzilla View PostI think the average car uses maybe 2 or 3 litres per hour idling, so it's naff-all really anyway.
The only real advantage is the lack of emissions when not using the petrol engine.
Is it right that the VY was the last of the lean burn ecus? My mate had a company car VY that would do 350 kays around town and then on a trip to the nats got a thousand kays no worries driven normally. There was a huge difference in fuel burn between urban and highway cycle; especially when it was light.

The Prius doesn't work on that sort of trip because the engine has to run pretty well all of the time IIRC - which then leaves you with a 1.5 litre engine working hard to lug around a heavy car. I think Wheels drove one from Sydney to Melbourne a couple of years ago and the economy was unimpressive for that reason.
Around the city, I'd guess the Prius would have well and truly beaten the VY (although I'd like to see a proper comparison to see how big the difference would be).
And for the record, in my VE SS M6, sitting on 110km/h cruise from Canberra to Sydney, 9.5l/100km is within easy reach. (More like 13-13.5l/100km around town, but that's in Canberra). I don't have anywhere I can set the cruise for 90km/h for long periods, so I don't know how my car compares with the VY and Prius on a like-for-like basis.

Its a pity the tank is so small, a usable 100L tank would be nice.
