The Commode would use double the fuel.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that hybrids only have an advantage 'round town, where they don't waste all the energy spent in acceleration on braking.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

soon all cars will have some sort of "hybrid", ie, "energy reclamation" mechanism... some manufacturers have stated they want all their cars to be hybrid by X year...

it's not surprising that all the different models of hybrid here (and there are many) have not reached Aus yet, and may not for a while

the E-4wd option seems orright :D

I don't have anywhere I can set the cruise for 90km/h for long periods, so I don't know how my car compares with the VY and Prius on a like-for-like basis.
My VY SS was much the same as your VE 13.5-14l/100km in town and around 9l/100km on the Highway.

Just picked up a new 2.0L Diesel Golf, I've only put 1000km's on it but I'm, getting 7l/100km around town. Have'nt had the chance to try it out on the open road yet.

In my 05 BA Coon I have never reset the average fuel consuption and drive every day up and down the Blue Mountains (~80Km with a fair few sets of lights) and it averages 9.7-9.9L/100Kms. When crusing up to QLD at around 130 it sits around 10.5L.

On the other hand the XY has averaged a 60L tank in 50mins or roughly 180kms.

yep, kinda cheating to reset it once your already going.
I did the same thing (reseting it after i got onto the highway) last week and my BA falcon (shorter 5 speed gear ratios and 3.45 diff) got 9L/100K's with the cruise at 120K's, around town i get about 12-13L/100 but i'm a bit of a hoon.

EDIT: If i reset it and did the same trip out of Newcastle, an hour down the highway and then back i'd probably get about 9.4 or 9.5. Fat fucking thing kills a chunk of the environment every time i leave the lights.

I rented a Prius a few years ago in the US and it was uber-ghey.

I live in Park City, UT which is about 30mi up a steep freeway from Salt Lake City - on that hill it would run on the battery for about 3 metres then I would be wringing the neck of the gay 1.5 trying to maintain the speed limit with trucks up my arse for the rest of the trip, while using heaps of fuel cos the little engine had to lug around the heavy batteries and extra motors.

                    1) Dude was a dipshit for thinking he'd get uber-good consumption on the freeway. The hybrid principle in the Prius is designed to be best around the city in stop/start traffic.

                    2) I can think of more than five Prius customers of mine who continually get better than the factory figures whilst in suburban/city driving.

                    3) The batteries do not, I repeat DO NOT, only last a few years. The Prius has been available in Australia since 1999 and to the best of my knowledge there has not been a battery failure yet. I may be wrong, but I keep fairly well informed on such matters.

                    4) My own Prius techs have assured me that if a battery pack did need replacing then it shouldn't be any more than $800 - $1000 for the whole job, go to whoa.

I sell new Toyotas, so when I say "My Prius techs" I mean the Prius-accredited technicians in the workshop at the dealer I work for.

In summary my car is the most powerful & economical of anything mentioned in this thread by a factor of at least 2. Someone fucking buy it.
