If he bumped up the price for the above he would have included the parts in the quote for the job. By the sounds of it,

And no, that figure from what I understand was just for the change, no reco head involved.
That sort of thing wasnt factored into it.

        get an itemised quote?

no guesswork then and we can all discuss what may or may not be over priced.

How is he going to do a itemised quote before he even pulls the head off?

where does the $1200 figure come from then?

It would be an rough estimation, plus allowing a bit extra for complications.
Also to fix the cause of the blown gasket. eg blocked radiator, pissing out water, corrosion.

get a replacement engine. say $300

oil and coolant - $20 maybe new timing chain/belt, plugs, few gaskets for exhaust $200 max

while you are there reco the radiator - $100-150 depending on damage.

all done with a few hours labour.

shit no, the foulcan is going strong as, touch wood :D Swear the bloody thing is bulletproof.

Looks like this ain't gonna be an issue for a little while, seems gran went into hospital yesterday with a very severe chest infection, and possibly a UTI, was in emergency and was only just ,moved into a ward. so this is the last thing to worry about.

Thanks for the advice guys, an option being tossed around between famco pty ltd is fixing the thing (properly, chemiweld ftl) and then seeing if we can find her soemthing a bit less likely to shit it self or something.

                      Michael.

Hae asked around and found somewhere with a decent quote, which would be ballpark half the 1.2k, which i was able to postively confirm was for remove head, machine, new gasket and replace.

So right now not worrying about anything, cos this is not gonna be an issue for some time yet it would seem.

I've just noticed your in Newcastle.

Penfold Automotive at Georgetown isn't cheap but they'll do a good job with no fucking around.

My old man doesn't really do much stuff on the side for people now. He doesn't like working when it's cold.

However his neighbour over the road is a mechanic , he's bloody cluey and he does stuff on the side on a weekend and after work at reasonable rates. I can put you onto him if you want when the time comes.

Only a few mechanics we trust in Newcastle and those are them. We tend to do most of the stuff ourselves but when we have a hassle we talk to either of them or get them to do it.

You sound much like me, most stuff I do and only farm stuff out I don' trust myself to do, the reason this was to be farmed is cos it is a relos car, and I don't trust my buildsmanship 100% to work for them 100%, for me I would do it (and have done a head gasket for myself in my 02)

I know Mr Penfold, he has been hillclimbing a BMW E30

The guy i got the reasonable quote from is my parts pimp and he has done some work for the old boy and I in the past and I do trust his stuff. The real reason behind this was to find whether the place the fam went to in the first place was a rip, in order to tell them to pull the pin before anything was done and they blew all granny's cash. Mission accomplished.

                          Thanks
                          Michael.

That's the good thing about having the old man , he's been around the block a few times so he knows what to do , and I do most of the work since his arm isn't that good these days.
