When looking at Golfs in the USA, IMHO it's worth rememberising that they're not necessarily as well made as the ones we got here; I don't know if they're all made in Mexico (eg. R32's may be low-volume enough to have come from Germany), but many are, and the US market views VW's as not being anywhere near as reliable as an Acura.

If in the USA I'd also maybe look into leasage as opposed to buyage ... things seem to depreciate pretty hard, which on one hand makes used cars cheap, but on the other it means I just can't understand how leasing companies over there can lease you a BMW 335i for $500/mo (all costs included).
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Forg: not sure what the story is with the GenIV Golfs, but my old man just bought a GenV (new model) R32 DSG and it is made in Germany. The rest (GTi incl.) are made in South Africa. The difference in build quality is very noticeable.

Your dad's not in the USA, I presume?
Their non-R32's are made in Mexico, but it's possible their R32's are made in Germany like our R32's are.

I would also assume the R32 is built in Germany, I haven't been able to find out one way or the other with my cursory looking.

I will say that I got a bad impression of VW reliability thanks to a good friend of mine. He bought a 2000 Passat 1.8T brand new and had many issues with it from 20,000 miles onward. He kept it for a couple of years and swears he will never own another Volkswagen again after his experience. Granted, the R32 is probably subject to more quality control than a cookie-cutter Passat.

I've asked the dealership to give me a price for the RSX including tax, title and license (rego, as I understand it). If he's willing to negotiate a bit, I might buy the car.

Indeed, nicely done on the topic. Just got off the phone with the sales guy. He's obviously keen on my buying the car. I'm going to go drive it again; apparently the car "popping" out of 3rd gear is common. I need to see if this one exhibits the same symptoms as I'd rather not have my car immediately in the shop.

Well, the car's getting on in years, but I have until June '08/48,000 miles at least. Powertrain warranty is 7 year/70,000 miles, so I should be good if the transmission is shit.

I ended up buying the car, they gave me a decent price and I really can't complain. I like the car, girlfriend thinks it's ricey though. I guess this means I love the cock, if the polls are to be believed.
